Post 911's in the rearview

Why do the 911 turbos cost so much money when a slightly modified honda can beat the pants off them? I'm so tired of these people in Porsches copping this puritanical holier-than-thou attitude when in the end they're not much to write home about for the most part. 944's are pretty cool though. At least most people driving 944's are cool. I know not all you 911 people are that way, but MOST that I've met or run into on the highway are just ******. We're all car enthusiasts, just because you got ripped off doesnt make it okay to be an *** to people who didnt get ripped off.

*sigh*

Sorry, I just ran into another one on the highway, tried to be friendly, got flipped off by the guy in the 911 and then he tried to pull away from me. It was sort of sad. It must be embarrassing to look like a chump like that.

Ack.

To those of you who are cool: I apologize and look forward to meeting you out there on the road somewhere. To the guys who are rude and pretentious. Get over yourself.

ripped off?? that comment makes you no better than the P-car owners that you say "snub" you if you seem to think all porsches are overpriced and we are dumb for buying one. you get the response that you do because most porsche owners like me could care less if youre trying to race us in your souped up econobox with v-tech powa... this is why ricers like you are a complete joke and every time i see one in my carrera i just ignore em like the plague.. got nawzzz???? idiot

I dunno about 911 drivers being ******. Observe any highway or street, and you'll find the 911 guys (and girls) driving in an orderly fashion, while you have the Ricers dodging in and out of traffic like a re-enactment of "Fast and Furious"

Let me ask you this: in the year 2027 (25 years from now), will there be a market for 25 year-old 2002 Hondas? Hell, will there *be* any 2002 Hondas? Betcha the market for 2002MY Hondas/Acuras/Supra won't be *anything* like the market for SC's and Carreras is today.

And, if you think your Honda is so Big and Bad, I invite you to come out to a *real* track - no, not the one one at Scandia where you hang out now. I'll be @ Thunderhill on 3/26 for a time trial - bring it on...

I'm very confused!! What world are you reporting from? Granted there are fast cars of many makes and models and Porsche's aren't always the fastest out there, but to me your initial post is not about much more than trying to get a rise out of the people on this board.

Sounds like a load of crud to me.

I'm going to just assume that you are talking about a Comptech NSX.

Owning both a 911 and a Honda (well, Acura Integra but whatever it's a Honda in the ROW) I can say that they are both good cars in their own way. The Integra is economical, quick and responsive. I drive mine to work every day and always have some fun in the on/off ramps. However, I don't know what the hell you are smoking if a "slightly modified" honda can take a 911. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a 1.6, 1.8, or 2.2 litre I-4 that will take an H-6 in a straight line no matter what the year. Take that competition into some curvy mountain roads, and I'll be drinking a beer waiting for you on the other side - can't torque steer with fwd.

He was trying to be friendly, and you guys don't seem to be helping. Being called an idiot and a dork doesn't help. Lets prove him that most Porsche owners are true friendly car enthusiasts and not owning a Porsche(s) just as a status symbol.

You forget to mention that a "slightly modified" Honda that can take a 911 Turbo would probably be turbocharged or supercharged, have NOS, and a host other mods, which would basically give you a grenade motor with a shelf life of about 15 minutes. Yeah, I saw the Fast and the Furious, have watched some NARA events on Speedvision, and some of those cars probably had 15-20K in their motors. Then ad in the cost of the tack on body work, booming stereo, and goofy paint, and guess what?, you could have had a sweet used 911. Instead, you would have a suped up econobox that you'd be lucky to get back 30% of what you've invested in it.

I am sorry you have a bad impression of Porsche drivers. I think if you got to know a few, you would find that you and them have a lot in common. We are all car enthusiasts who happen to prefer different makes of cars. 911 drivers just happen to like sportscars with the engine in the right place

Guys - chill out. Let people have their opinion - argue with them but cool the name calling.

For what its worth 'nexusone' I live in 'rice' city Hong Kong. There's a million and one guys in modified Maxdas, Toyotas, Hondas etc and some of these cars really kick ***. But I think you may be missing the point - as someone mentioned earlier, most (if not all) od these will be rebuilt several times over ina period of a few short years - their longevity is compromised by modifications. So Porsche cars tend to stand the test of time much better. Secondly I believe that whether you like P-cars (911's or otherwise) they are a standard to which others (drivers and builders) try to reach and/or surpass. That's why when a ricer want a race, its often with a P-car driver who's been asked more than once. Its truely a bit tiresome after a while! People buy cars for different reasons. Most don't buy P-cars for racing others on the street. There's the feeling of (pre 90's models) of racelike qualities, quality of manufacture, respect for the company and its racing tradition, the styling etc etc.

I really wouldn't lile to get into the realm of challenges but if you take your 'rice' car to a DE or autocross and stack it up against the 911 I think you'd see why people love em. Don't get me wrong, the rice car (modified) may spank the 911 but again look at all the issues - winning ain't everything. Its a bit like the saying its not how long it is, but how you use it! Its not whether you win, but its what you get out of getting there.

In summary, its usually not the 911 owners who go on about how fast the car, its usually the people who don't have one that go on and on and on and on.......

In summary summary...please don't try to bring up any issues about 944 owners being cool and 911 guys aren't, or that there's some sort of rival mentality between the two. Many 911 owners have or did have a 944 previously and respect their awesome performance. Each to their own dude

Cheers
Mark

Now, if you were a Porsche owner (of any model) I'd have seen you - before you saw me.
I'm the silly bugger high beaming you, waving both hands thru the Targa top and wagging my lecherous grin out the window at you.
Yup, that was me! You all mostly respond with a wry smirk and a wee royal wave - Him again!

But, fairdinkum, if I saw some bugger pouting and waving at me sitting in a "ricer"? I'd floor it outa there, proto! after barking "what's your problem mate?"
I mean, how would you expect me to react? you're in a ricer f'gawdsake!

Nexusone,

Just admit it! You really want a 911. Start there and see where it goes. I love honda's since I had one when I was younger but really what is this desire to race around with your car. Chances are really high you are going to hurt yourself and most likely someone else. So, think before hand. See dude a caring 911 owner.

Sean: Get off your island, go on a mission for your people and bring back some fresh genetics. That's the trouble with islands. Pbth. Your attitude is exactly what I have an issue with. Such elitism is counter productive to what we all have in common as car enthusiasts.

To the others: I hear what you're saying about "highly-modified" motors. In my experience it is in the tight twisty turns that these little cars really excel the most. For what it's worth I have 35k HARD miles on a supercharged 1.8l B18C1 motor with stock internals and not a single problem. No rebuilds, no problems. I do know some turbo people with issues however.

My comments about 944 vs 911 may have been inappropriate but I've only ever run into one 944 driver who was a dick. 911's on the otherhand.... it's more common than I even like to think about.

Okay folks. Thats all for now. Just chill out and try to be friendly. We're all in this together, no matter what we drive.

"just chill out & try to be friendly" is advice you could have taken BEFORE you wrote your post to a Porsche enthusiast's board. There is nothing that demands that we "all be in this together". Frankly, I don't care about your perception of the attitudes of Porsche drivers toward you on the road. Your perception of your own behavior is not likely to be treated objectively.

We tire of gross generalizations, unsubstantiated evidence & insulting baiting... there is not much time spent by Porsche owners on Honda boards railing against incidents and attitudes. the reason is pretty clear to Porsche owner / drivers.
