Default What's the procedure for mounting a valve cover stud?

When I took off my valve covers to start a valve adjustment, one of my lower valve cover studs screwed out of the cylinder head rather than the nylock nut screwing off the stud. hmmm. So, what's the proper technique to remount the stud?

Thanks for your help.

Put the cam tower end of the stud in soft jaws in your vise, just tight enough to unscrew the old nylok nut. If you don't have soft jaws (to protect the stud threads) double nut the end with no nut, tighten the two nuts together, and hold while unscrewing the nylok. Once the old nylok nut is off, double nut the end that had the nylok and use the outer nut to screw the stud back into its hole. You don't need Loctite or anything like that, the stud will bottom out and hold the new nylok properly.
