Hey at least your 356 has them...mine did not have that option 55 Coupe
Love the vents in my early 911s though. Think they work just fine!

1) the tranny problems were ironed out
2) special 1 year only 8"fuchs in the rear (v the 7" on earlier cars)
3) last year of the true original 911
4) short throw shifter standard -- feels a bit nicer than the 87-88 ones
5) If it matters to you, the alarm is a bit better than earlier ones and a fancy dancy red LED on the lock ooohhhhh! Although this is really the only distinction with the other two previous years.
As for your concern with the fuel lines...I have heard this but never seen it. I know many 3,2 Carrera owners who have never had this problem and know none who have replaced them. Not too easy to replace though either as the lines go thru the tunnel and (at least on earlier cars) hard to get to.
Whatever you do, get a good PPI from a reputable shop in the area (contact the local PCA person for a good recommendation).

From 356 to late model 911!!
Be sure you want that model - they are real luxo-barges compared to an early 911, much less a 356. I'd try to drive one for a week back to back with a '74 or earlier.

Greetings Pedro -
I'm looking for the exact same as you - an '87-'89 Targa, and I've also been concerned about the a/c. We're almost neighbors - I'm in Coral Gables. A/c is obviously not the main priority when looking for a clean Carrera, but most folks cannot appreciate the 3-4 months in SoFla when it can be 90-95 degrees w/90% humidity. Our friend in Louisiana probably has the best understanding. As much as I want a purely original Carrera, I will consider the a/c upgrade when possible. Good luck with your search - we may occasionally be after the same car(s)!

Drifting
I have an 88 coupe, Diamond Blue Special Edition, now at over 100,000 miles.
Tinted windows help seriously so.
The major shortcoming of the 911 A/C is lack of sufficient cooling airflow through the condensers in slow stop and go traffic. To combat that problem I add 2 Spal fans to help SUCK more airflow down through the rear lid condenser. Initially I running these fans whenever the compressor clutch was engaged.
