I posted earlier about info on how to perform some basic maintenance tasks such as tune up with wires, brake pads and emergency brake shoes, braided lines and fluid change, oil return tube replacement and also wanted to add that I am looking to freshen up the shifting of 1st and 2nd gears. First just mostly grinds a little unless I'm at a complete stop even with double clutching and 2nd although does not grind will at times be a hard shift into gear and by hard I mean the lever won't fall into place unless some additional pressure than usual is applied. I have not beat on the tranny by any means and have noticed the condition worsening over a period of time. Is the problem synchro's or rings or guides and if so is this a job a very handy back yard mechanic can tackle his first time? I also want to install a short shift kit that I got as a gift and would appreciate any input on any of the above tasks.
Thanks in advance.
You did not indicate how many miles are on your car and thats a darned important tidbit of information in framing an answer to your question,....
I would offer a few things:
1) If your clutch is even slightly dragging from being out of adjustment, the transmission is difficult to shift. Check both the adjustments and if the cable is old, replace that first.
2) 915's are somewhat picky about what oil works best and make sure you have Swepco 201 in your gearbox. Most dino oils don't work as well and synthetics are a no-no in these things.
3) There are 3 main wear items in the shift linkage that do not last forever. If these are original in this '85 Carrera, replace these first and carefully make the necessary adjustments. Replace the shift coupler, shift shaft bushing, and the cup at the bottom of the shifter.
I would NOT install a short shifter unless its a Factory one. These tend to accelerate syncro and op sleeve wear.
Thanks for your input Steve. The car has 122K on her. The original clutch was replaced at 104K and the gearbox has just started to have the symptoms I describe. The car is completely original as I know it's history from new, I bought it from a relative who was the original owner. Is replacing syncro's a task that can be done without dropping the tranny? Just curious.
Thanks again for your help!
