Default Adding rear speakers to an SC

I have an 82 Targa. The previous owner put in a nice amp, front speakers and a CD players. He sold the car to me with some aftermarket speakers in the rear deck that are not hooked up, and he said they are trashed.

The problem is this: Any new speakers are too deep for the rear deck. There is only about 2.5 inchs below the deck before you hit the sheet metal for the engine compartment. They make 'shallow' depth speakers, but these are little nasty sounding things. The car has 600w amp, and I plan on putting in quality.

I guess I am fishing here. Has anyone done an upgrade? What did you do?

I have had this nutty idea of suface mounting some small bose speakers, but it seems like such a pathetic rig.....

I am not squeamish about cutting up the rear deck, as it was already modfied.

I havent fitted them in a 911, but some manufacturers do spacer rings for their speakers to avoid this problem.

I had a set come with a pair of 9" pioneers I bought, and also with a pair of infinity 6x9" ones, I think this would cure your problem.

Check crutchfield... I put some Kenwood 4x6 speakers in my SC Targa that fit
perfectly.

When updating my system, Ileft the stock speakersin the rear because of this. Apparently Porsche used speakers with a cone on the front (how does that work?). Anyways, I changed the front speakers and installed an ALpine am/fm/cd/MP3 player, and it sounds good. Since your rear deck has already been modified, you can probably have a local shop make speaker boxes that look good for you.

This thread has got me thinking about upgrading my system, I can't even switch on the load function on my stereo without the speakers distorting!

As I will be changing my standard door panels for RS items soon, I am going to take the opportunity to upgrade the speakers in the door; probably with component speakers with an active crossover in the door.

I want to put 6x9 3 ways on the rear deck and will do this with either the manufacturers spacers or make some MDF ones trimmed with vinyl, probably won't bother with an amp as the interior of the car is so small and my head unit is rated at 4x40 watts.

I used generic spacers for my 6x9's on the rear shelf and it works fine. Having the bigger speakers definitely helps the bass.

Thanks Ken. I actually just came across these.

http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/6X...RS_p_1785.html

That would give me nearly 3 inches of clearance, and that should do it.

I put some stock size Clarion speakers in my '85 and they fit and sound great. Go ask a stero shop for some free advice, how knows you might just find it easier to have them to the work for you! Best wishes - Jay

I have some 6 1/2" JL componant drivers in the back with custom mdf spacers. The rear shelf was all warped out so I pulled the skin off of the backerboard and rebuilt it with thin plywood and dynamatt. I used the passive caps that came with the speakers. IMHO highs from behind muck up the soundstage.

82 targa

They are horrible!

The spacers that come with some Kenwood 6x9's etc are shaped the same as the speaker and nicely shamfered and moulded to suit, I would ask your local aucio shop about getting them they will look so much better. IMO !

Keep in mind, you really don't "need" rear speakers.

Save the money, and the weight!

Try some small speakers back there for "fill" sound - don't bother mounting them. See if you like it. Then you can decide whether to get a new upholstery piece with no holes, or to mount the speakers.

That's when I told her we didn't NEED to get married. Now I'm sleeping in the car and decent speakers would be nice. Isn't it a strange world?

To elaborate, you generally want your soundstage to appear in front of you. This obviously won't happen in our cars, but rear speakers are really only useful for rear seat passengers.

If you had nice speakers up front, a good head unit and small amp, you would never miss them...
