Question Flywheel Bolt ?

I am in the process of doing a clutch job on a 86 911 coupe. I have removed the engine and took the pressure plate and clutch out. Now I am trying to get the flywheel of to replace the rear main (front to the engine engineers). Anyway it has these 12 pt. internal bolts. I tried ordering a special tool from pelican but got backordered. Anyone got a trick to getting these out? I think they are stretch bolts so they must be replaced, can I use other fasteners (i.e. alan bolts or 6 point hex 10.9 or 11.9)? I think I could jam a torx or alan wrench in but was afraid I would strip them?

Hi Marx,

You might try Baum tool at 800-848-6657, as I just purchased a 10 mm, 12 point socket for my flywheel. Mine is a 1966, so you should speak to the sales department to see what the correct tool is for you model. I would definitely NOT try to remove those bolts without the proper tool As it says in Wayne's book, ifin you strip the bolts, you have to grind the heads off and that may throw the balance off too.

Good luck, Tom

Be absolutely sure you use the proper socket!
You can probably find it at an auto parts store tho. There are some posts on Pelican bbs re this.

An impact gun will really help you get the bolt out easily.

You can re-use the bolts on an '86 - PAG put out a TSB on this (but not on the early cars - cut off date is about 1978).
Just inspect the threads and the drive socket to be sure they are OK.

Snap-on has a too that will do it. ?It is a highly stressed bolt. Don;t try to work with them with cheap tools. Either the bolt or tool will suffer.

It's a 12 mm socket that you are looking for!! I just got a 10 mm twelve point, so time to get the larger socket!!
