Porsche tail
HI
I recently bought a 1966 912 which came with a Duck Tail made of fiberglass, which is molded to the trunk lid. My wife does not like it and would like a whale tail. So I am on a search of a used trunk lid with a whale tail of which someone would like to sell inexpensively or trade for a trunk lid with a duck tail built on it. Either case if anyone has one to sell please let me know.
Thanks

You may already know that adding the Carrera tail or Turbo 'whale' tail also requires adding the Porsche rubber valance extension to the front, unless you never drive above 50 mph. Porsche never sold a tail without the front valance extension, which balances the effects of the tail on the chassis. Factory test results with and without valance/tails can be found in Paul Frere's excellent book "Porsche 911 Story". In lieu of adding another tail, you might want to consider returning to the standard flat lid that came standard on 911/912's. That's one reason 964's came with a tail that rose at speed, to maintain the classic 911 lines.

Seriouly consider getting an original flat engine lid. The early cars were not designed with a whale tale in mind, and not only will it look odd on a 912, it will upset the balance of the car. You would have to buy a later front spoiler as well since the lower valance extension will not work on a stock 912 valance. By the time you have gone to all of this effort you may have gone beyond the point of a 912, and you may want to look at a later 911 which was designed for a whale tail instead. Early 911/912 lines are some of the cleanest out there, IMO a whale tail would look greatly out of place.

I agree, put the 912 back to the factory lid, It will upset the balance of the car, especially in the short wheelbase, ruin your top speed and gas mileage. besides, I'm sure the 930 guys wouldn't appreciate a kid in a B16 civic thinking "dude I just smoked a porsche turbo!"

Quite right. I have to say that I have never seen a SWB (short wheel base) car w/ a factory Turbo tail. The duck-tail is quite a popular mod for the early cars, and if it was done well, you should try to convince her that she likes it, or as previously mentioned, go to the flat, stock lid.

Duck Tail
Hi
I kind of like the way it is and would probably go back to the original lid, but it didn't come with the car. I haven't seen any available. May try to look a little more for one.
Thanks for the input!

What condition is the ducktail in? Do you know who it was manufactured by? I've got a decklid and whale tail that I'm looking to get rid of. The whale tail is aftermarket, fibreglass, the decklid is the original, with holes drilled for the tail. There's someone local who may be interested, and if so would have dibs on the tail, but if he doesn't want it, we should talk. Either way, we might be able to work out a swap of your ducktail for my decklid plus cash, if you're interested. Email me at chris at calfinancial dot ca if you're interested.

Duck tail/ lid
Hi
The duck tail is fiberglas and is in very good comdition. I don't recall seeing a manufacturer's name on it, but wasn't really looking. I will look tomorrow and if I find something I will let you know. Can you send a photo of the decklid and tail ? What would be your asking price for it?
