Question 8's or 9's x16

I need some help deciding on wider wheels for my 1988 Targa. I want to stay with the 16" Fuchs and use the car on the street only. My reason for making the change is purely asthetic. But in doing so I don't want to lose performance.
my choices are, 6x8's, 7x8's or 7x9's.

Would I need to make modifications for any of these widths? Will the 9's protrude to far out of the wheel well? What would look best (anyone have pics they'd care to share)? What are the pros and cons of using any of the combinations (other than needing to have the speedo calibrated)?. TIA.

I would recommend going with the 7s on the front and 8s on the rear. 9s can be a little pricey.

You can use 7x16's on the front, and 8x16 or 9x16's on the rear. The width, by itself, has no bearing on the speedometer accuracy. To the extent that you use another tire that has a different diameter, that may contribute some speedometer difference. That said, Porsche speedometers aren't all that accurate to work with. When I changed my speedometer face to a 150mph face, I had it recalibrated as part of the change, and it was spot on, whether using 205/225 or 225/245's.

If asthetics are your goal get the 7(+23.3mm os) & 8(+10.6mm os) x 16 fuchs. the 9(+15mm os)x16 and 8x16 will appear almost the same from the outside(allright nit pickers the lugs are recessed on the 9s but not on the 8s) because the lips are almost the same, most of the extra inch is on the inside(not generally visable). In addition the 8s are much cheaper.

IMHO the 9s do look a tad better(I used them to replace 8s on mine), neither 8s nor 9s will stick out beyond the fender lip. I used 245/45 on the 9s(they can also go on the 8s) for a bit better gearing(the 245/45 is shorter than the 225/50 and will thus affect speedometer readings marginally) and a wider cross section for performance.

In the front I had both 7(+23.3mm os) and 8(+23.3mm os)x16 the 7 fit with little or no mods the 8s required a little more work. The same can be said of 205/55 vs 225/50. For little or no mods stick with 205/55 on 7s.
