BROKEN SHIFTS
THERE IS NO RESISTENCE BETWEEN THE LEFT TO RIGHT MOVEMENT OF THE SHIFTER. IT IS VERY EASY TO SHIFT BACK INTO 1ST INSTEAD OF 3RD. HAPPENED ALREADY. WHEN YOU SHIFT FROM 4TH TO 5TH YOU HAVE TO PUSH TO THE RIGHT. THERE IS KNOW PUSING TO THE RIGHT WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD THE SHIFTER JUST FLOATS. DANGEROUS!!
WHAT BROKE IN THE SHIFTER LINKAGE I KNOW THIS IS NOT NORM.

I suggest removing the inspection plate behind the parking brake assy., peel back the boot and take a look while you move the lever around. That should help pinpoint where motion is lost.

Correct, the cover Sherwood mentions is at the extreme rear end of the tunnel, under carpet and held in place by four screws. Under the plate is a part called a coupler, which has two bushings. You will probably find one or both in very bad condition. Don't try to drive the car until the problem is known - no sense risking an over-rev or a broken reverse, etc.

Yes do what Peter and Sherwood said, while you are at it replace the bushings in the shifter too they probably have been equally neglected.......and then turn off the caps lock

I'm in the middle of tweaking my shifter - replaced the bushings in the front and will tackle the coupler ones and readjust next weekend...
Anyone have a sense whether the Stomski coupler is worth the cost compared to a correctly bushed and adjusted OEM?
