Post Value of a '79 SC coupe?

Anyone have a set Excellence back issues? I am looking for the Bruce Andersen market update for SC's. If you could post the value range for '79's I would appreciate it.

A friend of mine has a '79 coupe that he wants to sell this spring. Good condition with 115,000 miles. It's been owned for a long time by a tweedy retired UC professor.

Thanks in advance.

Some folks think Bruce's assessments of value are too low. Look into the AutoTrader Electronic version for relative values.

IMHO, there are three (3) major considerations:

1. Does the car have maintenance records allowing one to assess "true" mileage?

2. Can the car pass a Pre-Purchase mechanical Inspection from a reputable shop?

3. Can the car pass a Pre-Purchase inspection from a reputable collision repair shop?

Most will advise against paying a premium for a super low mileage car. If you do, you drive it, you like it, you drive it some more, and pretty soon, you don't have a low mileage car anymore.

Bottom line, the tranny will probably need a rebuild or "freshning" after 100,000 miles or so, the engine could be good for 250,000, maybe more.

I would guess the prices could range from &lt;$10,000 for a rat, up to $15,000 for a car in great condition. If it needs paint, recall it costs &gt;$5,000 to paint a Porsche car correctly. A tranny is at least $2,500, a clutch about $800 assuming the tranny is out of the car, a major engine rebuild, $7,500, more of less. Good luck with the project. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

Bruce has the following values for a 1979 coupe (from the August 2001 issue of excellence):

Poor: 11,580
Good: 13,166
Excellent: 17,625

Hope this helps,
Jay
