Default Another "What's it worth?" '88 Carrera

I have enjoyed reading the responses to previous threads from people shopping for older 911s. What do you guys think about the value of this one?

1988 Carrera 3.2 Coupe
White/Tan
116,000 miles
factory f/r spoilers
Ruf 17" wheels
930S steering wheel and center consol
body/interior 8 or 9 out of 10
Located in San Diego
Original owner, all documentation
Unfortunately, no pictures to post but this car is very clean, well-maintained, and original with the exception of what I mentioned above.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I am going to say between $18,000 and $20,000 depending on PPI results.

In SoCal I think this car would pull an easy 20-22 if the PPI shows no major problems, if no paint work and original paint is still good, original ownership is documented as true and he has the records from day one...

I agree with the higher numbers, 20-22.

Original owner, all documentation, well maintained, I assume original paint, reasonable miles. If a PPO checks out, I think he could get 20-22.

I have to agree with Curt & M491. My favorite resource (Sports Car Market Magazine), pegs the range for that car between $21.5 - 24.5. That's new info taken from the March '05 issue, and the price range is the "retail buying & selling range for cars in very good to near excellent condition - significantly above a daily driver and one step below regional concours." Also, they assume that the car "has no stories attached." '88 Carreras are wonderful cars, and the owner has done a couple of things to personalize it, and that's OK. Wheels and steering wheels are easily replaced, should you want to. All well & good, BUT get a pre-purchase inspection done! Another thread recently mentioned a shop in SD called "Black Forrest," and said they were good. I do not know of them, hopefully others will mention them in this thread. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. The car actually belongs to my father, that's how I know it so well. He called me and told me he needed to sell it and asked if I had any interest. I took care of it for him growing up. The only time its ever been driven hard was when my mom needed something from the store and I gladly volunteered to go (dangerous when I was 16 years old!). The PPI went really well. It uses a little oil but not more than would be expected for an older 911. Compression was good, they don't think it needs a leak down??? The 120k service is coming up, they gave me a $895 estimate for parts/labor. He was going to put it on consignment at the dealer that does the work on it but I don't think I can let him do it b/c of how much I like the car and all the memories I have with it. Anyway, dad wants $21,000 for it. I told him I'd give him $15k and we'd talk about the rest when I finish my residency in a year and a half. So, he's driving the car out to me in two weeks. I'm planning to make some minor modifications (suspension, exhaust) and to do some autocrossing/DE-type stuff with it. Mostly, I'm glad I can keep it in the family.

Keeping it in the family. Even better.

You should pay the 'balance' when you can . . . us fathers appreciate that . . .

Enjoy it.

Yes, by all means, don't let him sell it to anyone else. 'Residency'--what's your specialty? Don't lose it over a few G's. It'll only be a day or two's work when you're done
btw, if you want to sell the RUF wheels, let me know.

thanks

I'm a 3rd -year Ob/Gyn resident. And yes, Ian, I will pay him the balance as soon as I am able. The Ruf wheels were my idea way back in 1989. He just had them completely reconditioned last week so I'm anxious to see how they look. I'll post some pics when the car gets out here.

Ok, let's see here... HMO's + school loans + car loan + gouging by insurance co.s + tort suits (my baby was, of course, perfect...) + tort "reform" = lengthy delay in getting that new Lexus....

keep the car in the family, at least you know it's history. Close the deal at $18K that's fair for both
