Post Should VIN Numbers Match Exactly

I have a friend looking at a 1986 911 Cabrio Carrera 100K miles asking 22K. Good ++ condition.

Under the hood on the chassis (trunk) stamped in metal is the serial #:
WPOZZZ91ZGS170706 and on the door and dash is:
WPOEB0917GS170706 - the ZZZ and Z being the only different #'s between the
two.

Does this sound normal or should the numbers match exactly.

She ran car fax on the VIN # and it came back clean - It looks like no welding
or accidents either.

Hi:
You're probably OK. When the cars are first built, her chassis doesn't know whether it'll end up being a car for the US market, Japanese market, or Euro market...known as ROW ( rest-of-world), so "ZZZ" is common on the trunk floor next to the smugglers box for all markets. The "ZZZ" will be replaced by the other digits on the door or window frame, for USA cars. Looks OK.

I would confirm all is ok by;
a) having the chassis inspected closely by a Porsche body specialist,
b) checking that the body panels "anti-theft" vin #s are intact & agree w/ the US Vin #,
c) doing as much "historical tracing" of the car's past as possible (owners, dealers, service, etc.).

My '86 is the same way so Wil is correct. When I first got the car and came across the VIN in the trunk I though "OMG! my car was made from two different cars!" When I compared numbers though, only the ZZZ/WPO part was different.

I called PCNA about the same thing on my 91 Turbo. They confirmed that this is not a problem and, as this list is proving, quite common.
