Check out the Porsches sold section here: http://eurosportimports.com/ The land of the ROW - Cars usually have deposits before they land in North America - and they're not inexpensive! A good ROW can literally save you thousands of dollars in upgrades.

Well, I don't suppose an Acura Legand counts, but my husband drove one to 407,000 miles! His 968 now has 155,000 on it. We'll see if it goes as far as the Acura.

Peter,
This is really good to hear. I was beginning to think I made a mistake by getting something with so many miles on it.. I bought your book by the way a few years ago and have used it many times when looking into my first Porsche. It's an excellent reference. As a matter of fact it was your book that I used to make my decision on a 1978 to 1983 911SC. You convinced me that those were great years for Porsche and they were in my price range. Thanks for writing the book.

Hello Hello Hello
290,000 (almost three hundred thousand miles).
With a engine supposedly rebuilt 50,000 miles ago. Even if the engine was brand new, the car has just under 300,000 miles.
You will never be able to get your money back on this car.
You will have a very hard time selling the car.
People won't even call you on the car when you're selling it because of the mileage.
You must be desperate for a 911.
Just chill out, take a deep breath, and keep looking.
Unless the car is <$5000 keep looking.
Do you ever think you could insure at a value that would even come close to replacing the car, for what you would have in it, in the event someone totals it? You would be given ACV (actual cash value). And on a 300,000 mile, over 20 year old 911, it isn't going to be much...
The insurance company would salvage that car out without so much as giving the decision a second thought.
There's nothing like getting a "new" 911 (even if it's a used 911). But you can't let the emotion cloud your judgement.
$3,5000 - $5,000 max.
What is your budget for an SC? (approximate figure). I can ask around. (if you want)

DaGoomba (and David): Thank you! DaGoomba - the seat treatment (suede + red stitching) sounds really different, but on a 300K mile car you can do anything you want! If you don't like it used seats are available. I hope that your drive from L.A. goes well and that the car gives you many years of good service & fun. (Did you find out which shop did the engine?) Find a good mechanic - the car should have an oil & filter change (and safety inspection) every 5K miles (or one year), and a major maintenance every 15K miles.

Watt: Just got your pm and sent you an e-mail. What's it been, 1997? Man, time flies. I sold the shop to Marc in 11/99, still seems like yesterday. Sorry that you had to come to Bakersfield; but it's getting better, we just got a California Pizza Kitchen. Now, if we could just figure out the smog thing and that string of 100 + degree days that we have for 5 or 6 months every year! Anyway, this has nothing to do with this thread, so...

Is it me, or are there not a lot of 911's for sale around these parts. I have been able to find two '87's within about 100 miles of here in two or three months of searching. It's proving to be a little difficult to look at anything farther away than that, with family and work responsibilities. I'm supposed to drive one of the two tomorrow. It's a white '87 with 68k, new clutch at 60k, lowered, chipped, exhaust, blue leather, momo wheel, polished 16" fuchs, spoilers, most records, 3 owners, owner states it's an 8.5 out of 10. I'll post some pics and tell you what I think...

For $3500 I will buy every single SC & Carrera out there with 300,000 + miles that has had a full engine rebuild & passes a PPI w/ flying colors ("one of the best SC's I've seen") . I imagine alot of other people would without a moment's thought as well, which would suggest that the market price for such a car is somewhat higher than that.
The only SC's that I've seen for less than $5k are rollers or smokey & rusty basket cases that have been abused.

Thanks for all the info. I think I might have found a car. '89 coupe with 118k, totally stock except new stereo. It's in great shape in and out with only some minor scuffing on the driver's seat bolster and some slight fading on the roof behind the sunroof. The guy's the fourth owner and has all the records from day one. New clutch at 113k. He's asking $25k which seems kind of high to me but he's willing to negotiate. Getting a PPI on monday...
