Post looking at a car in the classifieds

I'm going to look at the 85 911 thats in the classified section. Does anyone no of any inherent problems that I should be looking for in a 1985. Car has 70.000 miles and they are asking $20900. Is this a fair price??

'85 is part of the Carrera line - fairly bulletproof. no real known issues to speak of. car has the 915 transmission, which isn't smoothest in the world, but still works quite well.

Price seems a little high IMO though you didn't give a lot of specifics. Suggest checking other classifieds to get some other price data points - even eBay will give you an idea of ballpark prices.

FWIW, I paid $14 for my '85 Targa a year ago - though mine had 124,000 miles on it.

Good luck!

I paid $17k for my 87 Carrera with 72k miles on it - that's with the G50. You can find a better deal, unless this car and its records are immaculate.

Premature valve guide wear was a problem for some of the earlier Carrera's.

Make sure your PPI includes a cylinder leakdown on all 6.

On the 915...a lot of people actually prefer it to the later trans, as long as the synchros are good, its not a problem. Just personal preference.

Cool

I bought my 85 Targa a little over a year ago with the same milage. I paid 21K. It was a one owner car with full records. Since I bought it I had to get 2 new tires & a full service. It was exactly what I wanted & I had looked for 3 months or so before buying it. It was always garaged, never driven in the rain & was serviced by the dealer the PO bought it from every time.
