Angry Large Oil Leak

I have an 85 Targa that has been stored in a heated garage for the last few months. Recently, I've noticed a large pool of oil from the center portion of the engine and below the return hoses. After running for a very brief period of time there are visible dripping from the engine. Any ideas for location sites from which this is occurring??? Approximate $$$ to repair....spring is almost here and wish to drive engine-condition permitting....... <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

What's the condition of your return tubes - original? They leak eventually. You can replace them yourself with the new collapsable tubes, which run about $18-$22 a piece. Should not be a big job, if that's really where it's leaking.

Another thing - the leak could from your case seam. This happened to me and when I broke out the torque wrench, I saw they were way too loose. I think the case bolts need 26 ft./lbs.

I think Rick probably called it with the oil return tubes. Grab one and if you can move it around in it's bore, it's time for some expandable tubes and new O rings. If thats not it check the Oil Thermostat O ring on the top of the engine near the front. It is kind of a pain to get to, loosening the rear motor mounts and doing a partial drop sometimes makes it easier. If you find oil on the top front of the motor also look for the sender unit in the same location, both are common areas for large "suprise" leaks.

The previous post are right on. Take a little time and clean up the motor so you can see exactly where it is leaking. Also, remember oil will travel down, so clean as high up on the motor as you can, you might be surprised where it is coming from. I learned the hard way to not buy parts first.

Good luck

Also the oil presure senders, located in front of engine. You need to clean engine real good . Then run and look for leak source.
