Unhappy gearbox stuck in 3rd

I have a 1983 SC stuck in 3rd and can't pull the stick out. Is this a common pb to SC's? Does anyone know/have any ideas how to get it out? or suggestions?
Thanks

I had done this a few times in my 72 with the 915 that was in it. The problem was I was racing it and slamming it into gear. The only way I can tell you to unstick it is to access the shift forks under the transmission. There is an access plate that has a fork looking arm attached to it. This pivots the shift linkage. Looking up in the trans you will see the arm from the selector with a little ball on the end and three rods with a groove. The three rods are grooved to catch a different shaft when the selector is moved. To put the unit in neutral you will want to line all three grooves up gain so that the arm can slide back and forth through them again. I would suspect something is astray in the tranny as well and should be torn down and checked.

Thanks Stephen,
It worked like a charm got it back into place. Not as hard as it seemed just a couple of hours. Here is another question since you seem to know your stuff very well. I recently had the engine dropped and put back in. Unfortunately the guy who did it was a total novice and I got ripped off big time. Could the gearbox problem been cause by the stick not being aligned right inside the car and have forced the ball to be shifted to one rod like it was? I had not driven the car more then 200 miles since the engine had been put back in when it happened. Also do you know of any trick to put oil in the tranny, and what oil type to use.
Once again thank you very much, saved me a bundle!!! You definitely deserve the PHD on your screen name

My pleasure.
Ok on the alignment, you bet that could have been the problem. Ideally when you drop the motor and trans you simply undo the allen bolt and bull the coupler off the shaft. You might try resetting everything up and see if that helps. If you are not slamming gears then there is something causing it to jam. The other thing is if someone has been in the tranny and for some reason moved the holds for the shift fork on the shaft it could cause it to bind.
On the oil for the tranny, I like Kendall which is what the dealers use to use. Just about any quality lube will work including Swepco. The easiest way to get it in there is run to your local parts store like Western Auto now Advance I believe and pick up a pump. they sell them for about 10.00 and they screw down into a gallon of lube oil and have a small hose. About 5 minutes of pumping and you are all set.

FRP911,
For easy transmission oil refill, go to Home Depot and buy copper tubing and several elbows. Put some tape on the fittings and you have a custom made oil line. Just be patient when pouring the gear oil into the funnel attached to the copper tubing. I prefer Swepco trans. oil.
Works like magic.

Thanks Boy T-911 and Porsche Phd for the oil tips. What amount should I put in?
