Default Should I update my SC?

I need a few opinions from you guys please.
This is my 83 SC & although I really like the look of it at the moment (Just replaced the original telephone dial wheels with turbo's) I do like the smoother looks of the 964 bumpers.
As I need to get a few bits of paintwork done in the spring I was considering updating them to the more modern 964 look at the same time.
Might put a different wing on too...not sure.

Now I know it's a shame to mess with originality, but I've already done that with the wheels & it's not as if SC's are rare or anything!

I don't want to change for a different car (964) as my SC does everything I
want & I know she's superb mechanically.

Car looks great - save the money and keep it more original.

I respectfully disagree. The SC and Carrera look better with Fuchs wheels. I'd keep going with your plans to update its looks and go with a 964 or 993 appearance. This of course assumes the budget is willing.

She's a beauty and you've already got the Carrera (IMHO cleaner than the more common Turbo) rear wing. There are a couple of smoother front valances available that retain the 911 look while also flush mounting the fog lights. One has two thin horizontal openings and the other with a single, deeper opening (kind of Alois Ruf-styled). Here, they are in the Automotion (nee Performance Products) catalogue. (no affiliation)

I wouldn't do it. If you want that look, than just buy a 964. The money you put into this "Upgrade" will not increase you resale value much, if any.

I like your 911 bumpers more than the 964 squared-off look (but I like the early long-hood look of the pre-74's as well as rounded 993 look even more)

SC's are 22-27 years old, now. They're vintage. I think the smart move at this point (from a resale point of view, at least) is to restore it closer and closer to original. I'm personally not a fan of the later wheels on the pre-1990 cars. On your car, I'd get 7/9 or 7/8 fuchs, with black centers, and just keep cleaning it up from there.

The impact bumper 911 is -- for most people -- the classic 911 shape. I think these cars are going to continue to depreciate for another 5-10 years, but that they're eventually going to bounce back, and become collectible in the same way that pre-1974 911's and 356's are now. To that end, the ones 'updated' to a more modern look will not see a rebound in value.

Of course, those are only my opinions. And since I own a heavily modified 1972 911, it's clear that I don't even follow my own advice.

(But in my case, resale value is not an issue -- I'm not ever selling.)

I hear you all & I think as there’s a month or two before I get the work done I'll
probably decide to keep the car as it is.
I can't help thinking that 964/993 upgrades smack too muck of fake Rolexes & the like, as in trying to look like something you’re not!

My SC is an SC & proud of it, is the feeling I'm getting!!

The 80's Pascha interior would clash with a more modern 964 exterior look anyway!!!

Thanks for the feedback & Rockon

Jack is right that for a LOT of people, it's the impact bumper 911s that come to mind when they think the work "Porsche," and I tend to lean towards keeping cars original if possible. But it is your car and if you intend to keep it for quite a while, I'd say modify it as you wish - your happiness with it is more important than anyone's opinion.

I have a question about the "tail" on your car. I have an 83 SC w/the turbo tail, it has more of a "cupped" look to it. I live in Italy and spend quite a bit of time going over or about 100mph. It seems the car gets light in the front sometimes. I would eventually like to get a tail like the one on your car...so whats it called???

Thanks

I would keep the tail. If you want to clean her up, why not just eliminate the bumper guards? I never buy into this resale issue on anything of this value if it curbs your fun while owning. My buddies and I just had this conversation last night. How many cars would have been worth buying and storing. This means, even with a car's value increasing why being a trailer queen, does storing it and NOT enjoying it how YOU wish to over come the loss in FUN that you could have had driving it?

Its all in the eyes of the beholder, I guess. But I bought all my cars outside of daily transportation for FUN and not investments.....thats for the stockmarket and properties. I would take a 73RS if given to me, but then I'd sell it and buy a car like Jack's and a 930...then drive the wheels off both and have no regrets

Update it if that's what you like.

I updated my '82SC with a complete '97 993 interior (headliner, dash, gauges, etc.. everything). It was a lot of work (and expensive), but the one thing I didn't like about pre 993 cars is not gone.

I love the classic lines of the SC/Carrera's, but I hated the old interior.

It's 99% completed. :-)

Hi Zipperhead
As far as I'm aware it's a Carrera 3.2 rear wing (non turbo of course)
