Default '85 911- to buy or not to buy...

This may seem like a stupid question for most of y'all but here goes. I have found an '85 coupe with 145k on the clock that has spotty records and rust in the door jams and a little spot on the passenger door by the molding. I know, I know- run like the wind! But, here is the deal. For me the car is going to travel from my garage to the airport garage and back while having a few spirited drives on the weekends (when weather permits). So, I really don't want an excellent example- just a fun ole 911! Still, I respect the p-cars to much to treat it like a "beater". So, let me hear from you- would you buy an '85 coupe in marginal condiition for $10k? Thanks in advance.

Good point, to be frank, I was not sure I could find an SC in good condiiton for $10k. The last 911 I had was an '83 (before our fist child came along) and I love SC's- I just happened on the '85. I may back off and look for a good SC or maybe spend a bit more and go as new as '89. Good point- thanks!

$10K is too high, not so much for for the mileage but for the spotty records and rust.

Problem is that you'll fall in love with car no matter how much you pay for it and when something goes wrong you will pay to have it fixed. This can lead to having $20K plus in a car that's worth $15-16K. If you could get it for $ 6-7 K it might work out.

Otherwise, I'd wait for a better example.

Rust is common enough on the pre-galvanized cars, and that's a huge red flag right there. But on a galvanized car, I'd absolutely say no on this one. Remember that this is only the rust that you know about, and on a fairly "rust-resistant" body. I'd be concerned about what lurks everywhere else. If everything else checks out well with a meticulously close PPI (given the spotty records and rust, I'd check extra close) it "may" be ok given that price AND if you're willing to accept the potential for costly work in the future, and that's only IF the PPI comes back with a strong drivetrain, etc. I'd pass on it simply bceause P-car labor is so costly when things aren't right from the get go. What I've learned when researching and kicking tires with my SC is "cheaper now" will more likely translate to "more costly later." Spending the (unsavory thought, I know) extra money for a sound car now is more cost effective than addressing major issues later ...my conclusion anyway, FWIW

i agree. $10k is too much for a 'beater' -If your budget is that limited look for older but better shape cars. You should be able to to buy a decent '80-82 that has been maintained.

Thanks for your comments! I am going to take your advice and squash the temptation to pick up a inexpensive car--for all the reasons you mentioned and I remember something about getting what one pays for...So, I will keep my search alive but for a truly nice 78-89 911. Thanks for talking me off the ledge!!!
