Post Most economical Highway Speed/RPM?

Only a new Porsche owner would ask this not so technical question...I haven't even gone through a tank of gas yet on my 87 - 944 NA. With concern to not 'carbon-up' everything and with what little highway driving I've done so far, somehow I'm thinking it's got to be around 70 mph/2600 RPM or 110km in Canada? Any experience?

I would say short-shifting(as long as your above the minimum shift rpms) and going the speed limit is the most economical way to drive. Carbon can get blown out with a tank of Techron and some redline blasts through the gears every so often. I subscribe to the "time is money" ideology so when the car is running its WFO or on its way there. I think thats probably the most economical way to drive. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
Maybe the 944 board guys can give you the real skinny.

Maximizing fuel mileage isn't much fun; minimizing fuel mileage is. My current fuel mileage readout supports what I read in 1975 (remember the gas crunch?) about maximizing fuel mileage. They used to have fuel mileage "races"; which were a lot like races to see who could finish last.

To maximize fuel mileage go slow (40 or so mph) using low rpm and high gear. All downhill would be most helpful. No matter what rpm, gear, or speed, pushing the gas pedal down more uses more gas. I guess they designed it that way. Well, I said it woldn't be much fun.

John--
don't know about the 944's power curve, but the 911 really STARTS at 3500 rpm. My advice - forget about the fuel mileage (its probably only 2-3 mpg anyway) and have fun. I routinely drive with the tach showing 5-6000 rpm (after properly warming car up, of course).

enjoy

the answer is... 55 Thats why we all got to slow down in the 70's

The downside is that you risk falling asleep at the wheel
