Default Bought 911SC; new to forum

Hello, everyone. I bought a 1982 911SC coupe in metallic platinum yesterday after lurking on Rennlist for a couple of weeks. The 911 is gorgeous and is in great shape! I'm excited about this car, and I look forward to being a part of this community.

I PROMISE to upload a picture after I take one!

Congratulations on your purchase! If you haven't already, you may want to read the 911SC FAQ on tech.rennlist.com

Strother,

Welcome to the forum. I have the same car you do. 1982 Porsche 911sc swarzmetallic paint code #007. I am told that the color should be black, but, my car is a platinum grey metallic like yours. Can you see if your paint code is #007 too? Look under the engine compt. lid where the gold decals are on the bottom. I'm having mine repainted soon. Check pictures.

Advice is... Check the frequency valve and relay, heater assist motor, and have the car lowered and aligned to euro specs.. My car is like a new car since just having those things done.

What part of the world are you in?

Good Luck,

Ron

Hi, Ron. Your car looks awesome. I love that color. I'll certainly check out my code, but my color is platinum metallic, not swarz (black) metallic. It is a sandy-silver color.

Man, I've got a lot to learn. Thanks for the advice on the frequency valve, relay, etc. When the car was sold in 1982, it was lowered and aligned to euro specs. (The previous owner had a massive file, including the window sticker and dealer added items.)

Houston, Texas. It's perfect temperature here for driving with the windows down!

I hope people don't flip at the price I paid: $18,000. I think the car was easily worth $16,000, but I decided that it was worth it to pay a slight premium given some of the things about the car and previous owner. He meticulously maintained the car and has the records to prove it. It also helped that the car was located only 2 miles from my house, so I didn't have to travel anywhere to look at the car or to drive it back. (Or pay for shipping.)

Kind words... Thank you for not making me feel like I've been had!

I really like that Swarzmetallic - did they make coupes that color? I'm still looking for my coupe. Been 4 long months and nothing worth buying here in SoCal. I've been told to be patient, but how long can one wait....Rock on USC!

Strother: Congrats on your purchase! I'm in Central CA, formerly from LA, and I wouldn't take a penny less than $17K for my '82 SC coupe! Many people will cover all the '80-83 cars with a blanket and declare them $11K cars. Not so (and I realize geography can impact price)! There are crummy cars, fair cars, and seriously good cars. The latter category is comprised of lovely cars that only a few will get to experience, enjoy what you have, be very selective regarding who will work on the car for you, and keep those service records in a safe place!

Thanks, Pete. I need to start keeping a list of people with 82 SC coupes so I can ask nagging questions! For instance, I'm still getting used to the 915 tranny, and at this point, I'm not sure what is normal, what is a problem, and what can be tweaked a little. The most annoying thing about it right now is that it wants to pop out of second gear when I upshift. That, and the fact that it won't downshift into first EVER without a grinding noise.

There are some minor things I'd repair to the car -- I don't want to assert it is in perfect condition. The paint is original, so it's got quite a few dings, scratches, and chips. The fog lights don't work. Anyway, I love it, and I think I'm going to have this car for a very, very long time!

Your trans needs work. Definitely needs a 1st gear syncro. Just did mine. Not sure of your mileage, but if you can put up with it you can probably drive it like this for quite some time. As a data point for you, I had mine completely rebuilt at a reputable local shop for $1,800. Price will vary depending on what they have to replace. Eventually it won't go into gear at all (or will keep popping out), and then you will have to fix it.

Strother.... if it is popping our of gear, that is not normal. It is most likely a linkage adjustment. That is a relatively cheap to fix. There is a coupling under the access panel in the center tunnel behind the seats..... it is a total PIA to adjust... you just have to trial and error it, making very tiny changes...(hours of fun for the whole family).... also make sure your linkage is intact.... my shaft came apart right behind where the shift lever cup is.... if the coupling doesn;t work that might be a cause.

Popping out of gear could also signal a more serious wear in the gearbox itself, so if the linkage sdjustment just doesn't work, you may have to face the ineviatble.

Downshift into 1st is a worn synchro.... rebuild or live with it. i suggest not downshifting into 1st if the car is moving. If it does not go into 1st even at rest, you have a REAL worn synchro... if you know how to double clutch, you may be able to get by, but I;d say a rebuild is virtually inevitable at this point... if you let it go, worse things can happen.

Many thanks for the advice. I ordered the "101 Projects" book. Will it walk me through some of the simpler adjustments and repairs for the transmission -- short of rebuilding it? I'd like to see if I can freshen it up without dropping the cash for a rebuild at this point.
