Lightbulb Crank Case Sensor - What Is It?

Hi:

My Carrera 3.2 is in a local Porsche specialist garage (in the UK) being repaired as it was failing to start.

The mechanic told me he found two problems. One was the secondary battery lead (what's this?) and the other was the Crank Case Sensor. My questions are...

What is the Crank (Case) Sensor as I cannot find it in my electrical diagram for the Carrera 3.2?

Does it have any other names?

Does it feed into the DME?

How does it effect the car from starting or would this be the secondary battery lead?

How much would you expect to pay for one of these sensors?

How easy are they to fit?

I would like to know a little more about this so I can speak to the mechanic on level terms (to check he's not ripping me off).

Thanks for all your help,
Richard.

I assume that your mechanic is referring to the crank position sensors. There are two of them monted right next to each other. One detects top dead center on the #1 cylinder and the other keeps track of the cranks position as it rotates around. They are on the upper left side of the bell housing, under the car. They are pretty easy to get at from under the car. The wires from them run through the engine tin right in front of the #3 cylinder and connects to a bracket on the left side of the motor right under the heater blower. The bracket has three different connecters on it. (The third connecter is for the Cylinder Head Temp sensor.)

I believe that both of the sensors are the same part number but I'm not sure. No idea what the price is either. If either of the sensors are bad the DME will not fire the coil so it could definetly be your starting problem.

Secondary battery lead? On the positive side you have the big battery cable that runs to the starter and then there are smaller wire/s that supply power for everything else. If that is bad I would expect that almost everything on the car would be dead.

Many thanks for your excellent help. This information will be extremely useful.

I've had my car for nearly seven years, and yet still know very little about how it works! I'm trying to learn more and more about it and therefore I'm extremely grateful that knowledgeable people like yourself are willing to help.

Best regards,
Richard.
