First off what a great site for the 911 lovers.

Well I jumped into a 1982 911SC turbo look, Black on Black. It is a sweet looking car. But like anything there are some downsides. The car had been sitting for six or seven years, it needed my attention. I put a new battery in her and it fired right up. Once the white smoke cleared there was a clicking/knocking noise coming from the engine. I think it may have a bad value, I hope not. I just order tune-up kit plugs, air/fuel filters, new value gaskets, cap, and rotor. I guess I am looking for a starting point. I thought I would attempt to give it a value adjustment, change the oil, and replace those parts. And then see what happens. Any ideas? The car does not seem to want idle at all. I would like to get this car on the road again. It also needs new rubber, Just a thought.... Not sure I want to give up the look of the Fuchs, but will 993 - 7" front and 9" rear work on my car? Thanks for your help, hoping to enjoy soon.

Where do you live? I would suggest an experienced, reputable Porsche shop in your area to do a complete evaluation. It's a small price to pay to find out exactly whats wrong and what to adress.

did the engine continue to make the knocking noise after it was warm. my 85 sounds very grumpy when it starts but then goes away after a few minutes, but my mechanic states that this is normal during its warm up. I cant tell from your email did you buy the car already? how much did you pay or how much are they asking, send pictures.

I would not drive the car until you resolve this.
Did you get a PPI? What did it show?

Replace the rubber brake hoses & flush out the old fluid - add new quality fluid.
Change the engine oil and trans. oil (Swepco). Change both again in about 2,000 miles.

I would keep the Fuchs. Other wheels rarely look right on these cars. Also, you may need that $$ for repairs.
Put new tires on every 6 years no matter how many miles they have on them (rubber gets hard).

After six or seven years sitting I'm surprised the fuel system isn't totally gummed up. While you're working on the brakes, make sure the pistons are free and working and check the seals.

I didn't know they made an SC Turbo Look. Is this aftermarket added?

Hey thanks for the advice, I do own the car long story short, I don't have a ton into it. It does settle down a bit after running it, but the knock sounds like it is coming from the exhaust values. I will look into the brakes and check the fluid. You may have to help me out here, but what is a PPI? The car runs, but I am going to clean the fuel out and flush the lines. Someone took this SC and put a turbo upgrade on it body the engine is a 3.0 non turbo. looks geat, but I want to it run great as well. I'll get some pictures coming soon.

PPI = Pre Purchase Inspection. Highly recommended to take the car to a garage before you buy it so you don't get surprises. They also generally recommend a "leakdown" test and/or misc other stuff. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for the car? And please do post pics! Welcome. Marv.

I'd pay for a post-PI now. Then you'll know what you're dealing with - not just as far as will it break, but will it maybe kill you.

Besides the above, replace tires more than 5 or 6 years old, no matter how much tread is on them - they get hard and won't stop or corner well.

Also, check for broken headstuds. These were not uncommon on the SC due to use of dilavar studs on exhaust side of Cylinders. IF this is let go, the combustion can actually burn through the head and cause leakage.... this can sound like bearing knock.

SC should start and idle very easily. However, the Fuel Injection can be a bit fussy when it gets old... especially if the car has been sitting. The system runs on high fuel pressure so bad pump, pressure regulators, injectors etc can cause problems. Also, there are alot of hoses that can leak, and the cold start can get old. Again, you really need to find an experienced Porsche specialist that is familiar with SCs, and can properly diagnose the problem(s).

Once you get the car right, it should be almost as reliable as a Honda. In good condition, an SC should be worth $10-$15K... so if you do not have alot in the car, you can affort a significant amount of repair work before you get upside down in the car.

Sorry for the delay, my wife and I had a baby on Thursday. It is a Porsche shop, they used to be in Iowa City. Moved to Adel a few years ago. It's called Bruch Motorwerk. Phone #515-834-1416 It is run by Drew Gengle.
