Default Front tire wear, 87 Carrera

I was told by multiple sources that it's not unusual for the front tires on a Carrera to wear primarily on the inner section of the tread. I'm fairly new to Porsches but I feel that the wear rate and location is somewhat aggressive on my particular car. I get about 15k miles on a set of fronts before the inner part of the tread is gone. I've had the alignment checked and was told that all is within spec. No unusual behavior from the front end in terms of handling and tracking. Is this wear pattern incorrect? Thanks in advance!

I'm new to Porsches, too, but not to cars with positive camber front wheels. 15K is not unusual for these, especially if you are running softer, stickier tires.

You should be happy with the tire life that you're experiencing.

When I purchased my '87 Carrera last month I noticed a slight wear on the inner section of the front tires. I thought it was an alignment issue due to the fact that the previous owner had the car lowered (Not for track purposes but rather for curb appeal Yikes!). At the time of purchase I had the car raised to factory specifications because it was just too low for my liking. It was a rather lengthy process (5 + hours). Is that normal? By the way, the PPI including leak down test certainly made my purchase comforting. It's the best 911 example I have owned.

what tire pressures are you running? The inside wear on front is probably normal. I went through a set with bad center wear (on the rears in particular) and have since lowered my tire pressure to 32lbs all around rather than the factory recommended on the rears (which was 36 or 40something on the rears if I remember correctly) I think my new set is wearing more evenly, but I only have about 3k on them - time will tell..... maybe I should dig out my micrometer.... hmm had a full alignment when the brand new rubber was mounted...

Factory specs for my 86 Carrera are 29/36 front/rear pressure. It should be the same for the '87. Inside wear is normal due to the camber. If you run 35/36 rear pressure, you will wear the center of your tires quick 10-12K miles. I now run mine at 29/33 and see no difference in performance and hopefully will get more mileage.

Inside wear can be caused by too much negative camber. Generally, Porsche specs call for close to 0 degrees camber, although on some production models it can be minus 1 degree. For track usage, you can see -2 to -3 degrees. Too much negative camber on a street-only car means the tires will wear on the inside. If you see inside wear, and it's not unexpected, swap your front tires to even out the wear. If it's unexpected, then have your front suspension and alignment checked out.

General 911 tire rule: Rears wear typically twice as fast as the fronts.
