Talking Porsche Factory Tour?

Hey Rennlisters,
I've searched the archives to no avail. My wife, our new baby (Sophia) and I are lucky enough to have friends to visit in Stuttgart and I have to visit Mecca (the Porsche Factory). How do I arrange a tour and what else should I push for? Ride in GT-3 around the test track? Anybody have input on other cool sites to visit? We will be in Deutscheland June 21st to June 30th.

Thanks Porsche Volk,

Alex J.

You need to set up a tour through your local Porsche dealer. And you'd better get on it today. They'll fax you a form to fill out and arrange it for you. DO NOT miss the museum, customer center, Porsche Zentrum dealership or the original spare parts department. Check out the links below:

Alex,

I went on the tour in 1995. A friend of mine arranged it through the dealer and contacting the factory locally. The contact person is/was Olaf (Lang I think). Olaf is a super guy, fully conversant in English. We had a full inside factory tour when they were developing the Boxster, went to the "Special Wishes" department and to the garage. The garage is where they have the family's cars as well as "special cars for special customers".

Back then, they had for example the last batch of 993's which were being delivered to Jerry Seinfeld as well as some GT2,s etc.

For the museum you don't need a special invite. I'll try to find Olaf's contact info and post it later.

BMW's museum is worth a visit while you are there!

I went on the tour in March.
It was pretty awesome. I pretty much ignored the tour guide and oogled the lines of 996TT engines waiting to be dyno'ed (or after being dyno'ed).

I missed the spare parts mueseum and I didn't know about the "special wishes department" or the garage. Maybe they don't have that stuff anymore or I wasn't special enough?? I arranged the tour through the local Porsche dealer. The first guy I called wanted me to call Porsche direct (in germany), the second guy I talked to (same dealer) set it all up for me.

The test track is at Weissach, along with all the cool R&D stuff...none of which you are allowed to see. They said that even the guys that work at Stuttgart aren't allowed to see whats going on at Weissach...

Have fun!

I am going to be living there...so if I can find out anything more I will let you all know. I wonder if I could go through the local dealer there for the tour reservation?

I just went there recently. My local dealer gave me a contact person in Stuttgart to arrange a tour:

Talking

My last most recent trip to the mothership left me disappointed. The home town of two of the world's greatest car makers and only one good museum. Yes, folks, I am afraid to say that the Diamler Benz people have a real auto museum and the Porsche people do not. What a surprise to find the greatest sports car maker showing their heritage in what looked like an old auditorium. I try not to think about it too much anymore unless some writes on the bulletin boards about going to the Porsche factory. Other noteworthy museums: Ferrari in Maranello is probably the best and newest factory museum; BMW in Munich is good. Fortunately for some of us, the historic races several years ago in Laguana Seca, California brought out a great Porsche factory traveling pavilion complete with rare Porsches, Jerry and the boys from Swaben. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Check out this link. We took this tour last year and the combination of the factory tour and the R&D facility is great.

H.D et.al.,

I'll be moving there as well next February. Haven't even thought about looking into it this early. I'll likely be there for three years, so I'll have plenty of time. Any info you provide would be great though.

Hi folk

I am in germany - 60km east of Frankfurt. I dont even know where the factory is - is if far from Frankfurt?

If you want Alex, we can go together - my wife, two 5-year-old twins and myself :-)

Anyhow let me know how you get on and if we can do anything from our end - however, I am afraid my German is non-existant

Late June would be perfect for us as I am hoping to collect my P later on this month - for info on my search, follow my link below...

take care and wish me luck

Thumbs up

Hey Rennlisters,
I really appreciate the amazing response to my question especially Rick Lee, Adrial, Juan and everyone else who offered contacts, experiences and other help. I've spoken to my local Porsche Dealer and had the form faxed to me, then I had to call PCNA and ask if the dates I intend to visit are not factory holidays or already booked up. So far everything is a go. I can't wait... Now that we have a digital camera I will post pictures when we come back.

Thanks again,

Alex J.

Hello

Olaf Lang was never a Tourguide. He is a high representative from Porsche and had the oldtimer archives in his hands. He also is a very succesfull racedriver who managed to win with a 917/20 in Laguna Seca fighting down Hans Stuck.

OK Hans helped a bit as a birthday present

So if you toured with him you also could had a tour done by Ferry Porsche himself. No closed doors.

BTW he is a native american.

Since several months he is in Weissach and I´m not sure if he ever has time to do tours again.

He is still aviable via housecalls but has now a new number so best is you call prefix germany ( mostly 0049 ) 711 911 0 and ask the desk for assistance.

Porsche is a poor company and the highest tax payer in Stuttgart ( Nope Mercedes don´t pay any taxes they even get money back, thats why Chrysler has so high loses to move the profit )

OK Mercedes invest big money into there tradition. The investet sum is around the money Porsche earns with monthly carsales.

You will see it reflectet in there museums.
On the other side if the Porsche guys are in good mood they show the jewels inside out.

Grüsse

Keep your eyes peeled as well... last year our group managed to spy the then unannounced C4S "hidden" parked behind other 996's outside the assembly plant - the tour guide was ever so slightly embarrased and quote "couldn't understand why they left it there".

Cameras are disallowed within the heart of the plant.. enjoy

Default Porsche Museum Update

Porsche Museum update! I was there today (26 Dec 2013), the factory is closed for Christmas but the Museum was packed. This is the first time I visited the museum since I was stationed in Stuttgart back in 1992. Back then the museum was a little dank building nest to the factory with just a few cars. Today I was overwhelmed as the new modern museum will rival and other automakers museum. If you get a chance to go it's very much checking it, easy to find and only a few Euro's to get in. I posted a few pictures, enjoy. Cheers

PS, I had a copy of the newest Porsche magazine 50 years, I got most of the employees working in the museum to autograph my magazine.

I was just in Germany on business two weeks ago. I stayed on until Sunday so I could take a trip to Stuttgart and see the new museum. I had previously been to the old museum (very small) and the factory tour in 2004.

I stayed in a small hotel near the train station and walked the 8 km or so to the musuem, so I also was able to enjoy the ambience of Stuttgart.

I had high expectations, and they were met. The new museusm is fantastic in every regard.
