Question VIN matches engine S/N?

The other day I wondered if the engine was original to my 911 1974 project. I was able to find the engine serial number last night. The VIN is 9114110070 and the engine s/n is 6151993. I understand that the 5 in the engine s/n means 1975 and the 4 in the VIN as 1974. With these two dates, could there be a senario where they actaully do go together? I had read that the engine s/n means 'last year of that model'. So could the '74 engine be made through '75 (if that makes sense)? I think the '75 engine has the oxygen sensor?, but I know mine does not.

Your chassis number indicates a 'G' Series August '73 to July '74 build Targa (not a USA car?) and is early in the series therefore likely to be a '73 build.

Your engine number suggests it is from a 'H' Series August '74 to July '75 Coupe (again not a USA car?). The number is late in the series and is therefore likely to be a '75 engine.

The only way to be really sure is to order the Kardex for your car, but this chart from Stoddard indicates that the chassis is a '74 Targa and the beginning engine number for the series was 614 0001. The '75 engine numbers started at 645 0001, so I am not sure where a 615-# engine would fall. What is the Type Number on it? It should be 911/92, or 911/97 for a Sportomatic car. A '75 engine would be Type 911/43 or /44 (for CA), or 48/49 for Sporto.

The car is ROW (not u.s.) but now I'm un-sure about the engine. Where do I find the type number? I think the 645 indicates a '75 911S whereas the 615 would indicate a standard '75 911. I had expected to find a 614#. Thanks for your input.

It's resaonably clear to me - your quoted engine number is 6151993 which falls between 6150001 & 6152007. This makes it an engine from a rest of world coupe fitted with the 911/41 engine (or 911/46 for Sporto but as you don't mention Sporto I stick with the ...41 engine) - see pages 48 & 49 of the Porsche 911 Red Book by Paternie.

Tom, I think you may be wrong - are you assuming the engine comes from a USA car? I don't believe it does - it comes from a Rest of World - numbers begin 6150001.

Yes, I was. Sorry, my ethnocentricity is showing.

74er- The type number is to the right of the serial number, stamped on a horizontal surface of the case behind the fan. It is near the righthand arrow in the pic below, with the left arrow pointing at the serial #.

Tom,

Could you put up an image of your '67 S? Has it been your car for all that time or a 'family pet'?

My father bought the car brand new in 1967, trading in a '65 356SC at a dealership here in San Diego, CA. He was an engineer and admired the Porsche designs. It was the first new car he had ever purchased, after building and owning nothing but used cars and motorcycles since his teens, including 3 used 356 models in the 50s and 60s. After test driving it, he said "finally, they have enough power" and made the deal. It was his daily driver for many years, until he finally felt he didn't want to shift anymore and bought a 928 with an auto trans. My brother owned it for 10 years after that, and I finally talked him out of it back in the late 90s. Engine and tranny have been rebuilt once and it has been repainted twice, I went thru the suspension and brakes and it still drives like new. More pics on my website, but here's one:

Tom,

Fantastic story, lovely car. It's great to hear that at least one early 911 is driven and loved all within one family. Thank you for sharing the information and for the images.

Nice car Tom. Thanks for the info. The type of the engine is indeed a 911/41. From Peter's explanation, it seems the engine is not the original to the car however it does seem odd that it would have been changed out within about 2 years of time. One day I'll have to get the Kardex.

It could have been an engine swap later in life, when the original engine crapped out, they put a used comprable one in it.
