Default Got THE CAR

Thanks to one of the Rennlisters. He even delivered it to me 1000+ miles! bought from pics and on good faith.....now I need an owners manual for an 87 911.
How can I tell the difference between 6, 7 or 8" wheels. I think I can see the "lip" of an 8 but what about the 6 and 7?

Congrats on the car.

To measure rims, just stick a tape measure thru one of the openings, hook it on the back of the rim & see what it says on the front part of the rim.

If its 87 it is probably 15s - 7 & 8 or 16s 6 & 7. They were the Fuchs options that year.

Ian, thanks, we drive the same cars, my wife has an '00 E46 cab. Mine is an 87 Targa. (everyday is an Isuzu Rodeo. ugh)
The wheels on the car are 16" but look the same as far as the lip is concerned.

That's weird. I just came back from Lauderdale tonight. I was at the Sheraton on Griffin Rd for 2 nites. Up & down I-95 from Vero Beach to Lauderdale in a Sebring rent-a-bomb convert visiting customers. The traffic sucks!

Back to Toronto & it is 0 F & just started snowing . . .

Your 16s are probably 6s & 7s.

Daniel,

If you've got 16s, you can tell if the fronts are 6s if the part to the inside of the lip is vertical, i.e. 90 degrees to the lip, in the same plane as the wheel face. 7" rims will have this part at a 45degree angle or so for about 1.25", and then the wheel goes vertical. For 8" rims, that angled part is a bit wider, maybe a bit over 1.5" or so. Congrats on the car!!

Edward, I will try to gigure out "what is which"...on my last 911 (79) I finally wound up with polished lip 7 and 8 x 16's, which is what I want now.
I will post some pics after I get it registered and cleaned up. Previous owner was more of a "mechanical" guy, all that is done which is good, now, I am the detail clean the hell out of it guy.
My cars almost always look better after a year of my ownership
Ian, you think traffic is bad on I95? Didn't you love being passed on both sides by maniacs going 20mph faster than you? And the left lane hoggers, and NO ONE HAS ORDERED THE OPTIONAL STICK ON THE LEFT OF THE WHEEL, THE TURN SIGNAL. That's the price to pay for nice weather year round, (if you discount August, September and October Hurricane season)
It's worse on the streets
OK, off the soap box.
Next time you are in town let me know.....we can have a Rennlist meeting.
Still looking for an owners manual

Hey Jeremy

Don't rub it in . . . remember July & August when it was too hot to be top down except at night?

It was nice to cruise top down though. I got a nice mild sunburn. I think I'll have to visit my Florida customers a lot in Jan & Feb & Mar . . .
