Default got my first 911! need some advice...

Hello to all everyone!
I am new to the Rennlist and would like to introduce myself. I just purchased my first 1980 911SC this weekend and is very excited to be joinning you guys. I bought this porsche with 19700 miles on it! and i took it to TRE for dave to check it out for me. With his blessing, i purchased the car. They were amazed at the low mileage and condition. It even has the original 1980 tires on it which i will need to change =) Can anyone suggest some tire choices? Also anyone would know a shop in the San Gabriel/Pasadena area that works on porsche? I just dont trust taking it to any tire shop without the special tool to take off the beautiful black nuts =) Also, is there a good shop that i can take for a full service and to have them work on my car regularly? TRE is great but its a bit far from where i live (rowland heights area). Thanks for all the help in advice and i look forward to chat and meet with some of you in the future. Thanks again for reading.

Congrats on the purchase!

I picked mine up earlier this month as well, and couldn't be happier (well, ok, if someone wanted to give me a 997 Turbo S for what I paid for the '84 Cab, I GUESS I would say I'd be happier... ).

Enjoy the new member of the family, and best of luck with her!

If you get the time, supporting the forum you're on now financially is also a great way to start as well, and helps ensure the info you'll need will be here when you need it.

Get a soft socket for the lug nuts. Performance Products sells them. most shops are going to hammer your lugs with airwrenches, so if this matters to you, find a guy who understands and will hand torque them (and won;t think you're a PIA).... you can strip the threads out of them with too much torque.

Lots of good tires around... check tire rack. Depends on what you are going to do with the car... i suspect you will be using this as a sunday driver, so I would steer toward a high perfomance tire with good rain performance like a Bridgestone SO-3 or comparable... lots of comparos on the TIre Rack site.

If you are a concourse nut, you might want to save the tires for shows, or even see if somebody wants them for their show car... you might be surprised.

Congrats on the car.... you can;t go wrong

A concours person's dream!!! Under 20k with original rubber on an '80 SC... I love it! We all love pictures, so post some if you can.

By all means don't throw those tires out!!! Put them on eBay if you don't want to concours that car and (as JCP mentions above), you might be surprised. Many concours guys have special rims with original tires that are used strictly for shows. Tires get put on at the show location and then removed before the car is driven far.

If the car has been sitting a lot recently (and with those low miles, it might have been) and you start driving it regularily, I'd watch seals and rubber components carefully since some items might fail just from age and lack of use.

Congrats and good luck with the new (literally) SC!

Adrian: Congrats! Your '80 SC has 170K miles fewer than my '80 SC! For tires go to the people that care; John Brown at Wheel Enhancement, (310) 836-8908. Address: 5901 Blackwelder St., Culver City, CA 90232. Don't drive too far too fast on those old tires, safety dictates tire replacement after 5 years. For maintenance I can recommend my old shop in Santa Monica, Red Line Service. Call Marc @ (310) 450-7414.

I would take the car to EUROSPORT in Burbank for any work. I have 5 Porsches and he works on them all. Ask for Mario 818-845-3876. Tell him Richard sent you..

Adrian,
I am not (yet) a 911 guy...looking, looking....
But I am up here in Pasadena as my signatuer says and I lived just over the hill from you at the top of Colima Road from you in Whitter for 40 years until a couple of years ago.

In Pasadena there are two shops. I use Strictly German. The owner is Duran, he's very experienced and I trust him completely. He's doen nothing but good work on my little 944 and will always give you good accurate advice that is not self serving. His number is 626.

Congrats & welcome . . . enjoy your 'new' Porsche.

What size wheels do you have?

You do realise that posting pictures of your car is mandatory?

Adrian,
Yes, I hit a wrong key.
If you go to the 993 board (may have to go to a prior page) you will see a run was planned for yesterday, this past Sunday. It was cancelled due to unforseen rain, but some guys meet off the 10 Fwy in Upland and ogle each others cars, shoot the breeze and make a run up Glendora Mtn. Road and ending on Azusa Ave (not far from you near the Puente Mall). I go another route now and end up in Glendora up near the 210 so it is a shorter trip back to Pasadena. It's a faster trip sometimes than others. They allow my little 944, so everyone is pretty cool. Take care. If you ever want to talk Porsche's drop me a PM - Personal Message via the board. -Dan

Adrian,

Congrats on a fabulous car and Welcome aboard !!
Glad you found Dave ...he and his shop are fabulous and worth the drive if you find no other. I can't help you on who's a good shop in Pas, but can recommend tires that I've used and liked:

-Yokohama AVS Sport - good grip, wear pretty well, good feel at limit.
-Yoko ES100 - similar feel to AVS Sport, but less expensive and a higher mileage tire, though still good grip and feel.
-Kumho MX - really like this one and surprised me by price vs. performance. Not a "cheapie" Korean tire. Grippy, good feedback, and better wear so far than the AVS Sport. I think I'm going back to this one when they're worn.

Anyway, hope this helps. Enjoy!

Edward
