Unhappy steering problems

I have recently purchased a '80 911sc and really enjoying it, but the other day I was driving and the steering became very stiff and jerky, accompanied with a squeeking in the column. I'm going to drop it off at the mechanic tomorrow, but anyone have any ideas what this might be symptomatic of?

Could be the steering box on its way out.

In the UK they cost about £150 ($280'ish!) as part of an exchange deal - probably in the US you will get one for a lot less.
