Hello, I'm a new guy here but have heard great things about the rennlist. I recently purchased a 74 911 project car. I would like to know what type of transmission it has (what number). I purchased the car with the engine already taken out (sounds crazy but I went for it anyways). It is a R.O.W. car (i.e. not made for the u.s. market). Is there a number somewhere cast into the trans. case? I believe it to be either a 916/16/06 or 915/16/06. If it is a 916, would that be a 5 speed? Thanks....

1974 911 ROW manual transmission will be a type 915/16 transmission (same as US, BTW). Carrera RS had a 915/08. 916 was the racing-only transmission the 915 was based on.

You have two possibilities. If your trans (the type number should be visible on the bottom of the differential housing) is a 915/16 you have a 4 spd., if the number is 915/06 it is a 5 spd. Both versions use a 7:31 ring & pinion. The individual number, also on the bottom of the housing, runs between 724 0001 and 724 9999 (4 spd) or 734 0001 and 734 9999 (5 spd). Good luck!

Is there a comprehensive listing of these transmission numbers somewhere? Did trannies equipped with limited-slip have a different model number on them? What's the difference between the 915/16 & 915/08? Gearing?
