Rough Idle 87 Carrera

Rough Idle 87 Carrera
I'm confused now. My car idles at 880 as it should for 20-40 seconds, then drops to a rough 600 and stays there. A tap of the throttle starts this all over again.
I've tightened manifolds, put in a new Distributor cap, rotor and plugs, put in a new oxygen sensor, and then gone through the "bridging B & C" and adjusting the air bypass screw. None of this changes the idle after those initial 20-40 seconds.
When the idle microswitch is disconnected, the idle jumps up to 1200-1300 as it should, so that seems OK.
What sensor input is considered by the DME at 20-40 seconds after the idle switch is activated? If the head temp, speed or air sensors are bad, why does the car run well in every other way?
Help!
