86 911 Coupe "Turbo Look" for $16,500 ?!?
Hello,
I might have stumbled across my 1st Porsche. I live in North Carolina and today I saw this 1986 911 wide body with front and rear spoiler for sale sitting in an office parking lot. The car is charcoal grey w/ black leather and looks to be in very good condition. Miles are at only 62,000. Price $16,500 or best offer. I know when a deal sounds too good to be true that it usually is, but I can't help but get excited about the possibilty of it being legitemate. I am going to call the owner tomorrow and get all the details. Since I have never owned a 911 what should I ask about the car other than the obvious. Of course I would have the car fully inspected by a Porsche specialist before buying it. Thanks for any input.

As you note, pre-purchase inspection by a reputable Porsche shop is a must. I'd be interested in verifying ownership and service history. Also, confirm car is factory turbo look with the m491 option (wide body plus turbo brakes, suspension, wheels).

If it's an aftermarket widebody, that price isn't very unusual. You need to confirm that it's a factory widebody. One way to do it (I'm pretty sure) is to post the VIN here. Replace the last four digits with X's if you're concerned about security. Otherwise, make sure the M491 option is on the sticker.
I'll second the recommendation for a PPI. It could save you another $16,500 in repairs.

It is not a factory widebody. I looked at the car about 3 weeks ago. You can see where the fenders flares were welded on. The car looks ok but you can definitely tell it is a modified coupe.

Up until 1986, the flares were welded on at the factory. In 1986, all 930's and "Turbo Looks" have flares stamped as part of the fenders.
Factory Turbo Looks were made from 1984 to 1989 and from '92 to '93. The 84-89 models had the same suspension and brake components as a Turbo. To visually determine if it's a factory version look at the rear brakes: the calipers should be finned 930 calipers with the short banana arms. The 930 calipers mount on the rear of the arm (toward the rear bumper), as opposed to mounting on the front of non-turbo arms.
