Default K&N induction kit

Hi,
Has anyone installed a K&N cone filter and had any benefit?
I read in a forum that they can cause erratic idling and cutting out.
Also that they can directly take in water when it rains!

What are the best types to install?

thanks
Amolak

Being a tech and performance enthusiast all the 'kits' I have seen look they may increase flow but the real issue is that the air is taken from the back of the engine compartment (where the meter is) and that air temp is much higher. That's not good for performance. As far as the 3.2's are concerned, the best thing is to install stock quality filter and cut /modify the existing air box cover (only on the end panel where the snorkel mounts). Remove the snorkel and open the rest of the end panel being carefull no to overdo it. The idea is that you want fresh cool air and that's only going to come from the front where the vent/spoiler is which coincidently is where the stock snorkel points to! One more thing is there is a 'horn' inside the stock air box that reduces turbulance of the incoming air flow before it enters the air meter. Very important.

I concur wholeheartedly,...

Those K&N cone filters look cool and they make a nice noise but they reduce HP, not boost it. Use the stock airbox and drill 5-6, 2" holes in the aircleaner cover.

Stick with the OEM paper elements unless you are racing and just change them every 10K or less for peak performance.

stole this pic from pelican. I played around with this for a week or so. With holes drilled in it and snorkel removed it sounds pretty much like stock. With holes drilled and snorkel in place it screams at WOT, very addicting, very distinct difference. As it is now I keep stock filter in, holes drilled, and snorkel attached. It's the best sound, for me anyways.

I would guess a 2" hole saw. BTW, I ave been running a K&N with intake pipe for about 8 years. Engine ingested purple oil has been a problem, and now those much smater than I say it decreases HP. I guess now I have to dig out my stock airbox and do some surgery.
Thanks and regards,
Steve

I too used K & N and assum it would increase HP (based on Preformance Product catalog), now the Pro said it's decrease HP . I still have the stock box, will modify it and see if it would make any different

TC_SJ:

Never forget that the whole purpose of catalogs and salesmen is to sell things (sometimes using inaccurate or bogus claims).

A touch of cynicism is healthy in this regard,................

This is fairly common on 964's - cut a bunch of holes in the air cover, or, cut most of the outside away to expose the air filter directly to incoming air. Benefit? Enhances exhaust tone, and 'maybe' a few hp.

I too "fell" for the added HP of a cone filter setup. It was unbelievably cheap so i figured why not give it a try. It sounded different initially, but once it began to collect dirt, the noise has changed from a "performance" sound to an annoying whistle. It will be removed and replaced with the original box after some carving. I may go with a "better" filter in the factory box, but I am now nearly convinced they are less bite and more bark.
