Help me decide
It's been 10 years since my last 911 - a 90 c4 cpe. I've also had a 77 3.0 and 85 cab prior to that.
I've been looking at 87-89 cabs and 95 993 cabs (964's don't really do it for me).
Assuming about a $12-15k price premium for the 95 993, what are the pros and cons between the models in terms of fun, maintenance, performance, comfort, cost of ownership, etc. Appreciate the help.

If you haven't already, you may want to post this on the 993 board, too. Granted, there's going to be a bias there, however, I'll bet there are owners that have owned both of what you're considering.

Carrera cabs are excellent cars that are relitively cheap to own and you can get a really nice one for the money you seem to be looking to spend.
The 993 is the pinicle of the 911 development and is a very good car.
Dont be so quick to dismiss the 964 however, it is basically a 993 with different clothing for alot less money, twin plug 3.6, essentialy the same suspension, wiring, chassis, its an awesome car.

I just bought my first porsche last week...a 1995 993 Cabrio. I found ti with 47,000 miles for around $36k. A few minor things need fixing but nothing major, no mechanical or structure. I am a new member here. The body style of the 993 is what does it for me. It has the style of the older turbos minus the permanent tail but does have the tail that can be up or only up after 48 miles per hour. But I have to admit, that wide body that the 993 has viewed from the front side and back is like no other but the turbo. Even the new porsche lack the robust rear fender flare and that my friend provides the look you NEVER get tired of admiring. 272 horses, add a performance chip and you are near 300, and that is all you need. The previous and latter models lack the width seen from the front and sides. I think the 993, aircooled, is the most distinctive styling porsche has ever produced...and is you look at the 2005 997, they are trying to get back there. Good luck!

I've had both. As far as maintenance, it's probably a wash. The 3.2's require valve adjustments, and the 3.6's have more stuff (dual distributors, power steering belt, pollen filters). As far as drivability, you need to drive both and decide which is right for you. The 3.2 is 10 years older, and is much more visceral. The 993 (to me anyway) is very modern, especially after driving the 3.2 for 8 years. Personally, I prefer the 993, but I may be getting soft in my old age. It's got tons of torque, a nice interior, and an air conditioner that really works. A friend of mine had the oportunity to trade his 87 for a 98 993 Turbo S for a week. By the end, he said he he couldn't wait to get his 87 back, that he really liked the way it "felt" better then the Turbo. I think he may have been sniffing too many gas fumes, but that's what he said.

Thanks for the input. Feel / flickability vs power / refinement. I don't think there's any 'bad choice' but you all are helping me understand the tradeoffs. I'm even considering an 84 turbo look coupe assuming it checks out ok. Thanks.

creature cat, you like that 'sheep/wolf ' phrase quite a bit. I like 930's but I'm not interested in the turbo performance or maintanence issues. Just looking for a driver.
