G50 loose shifter

G50 loose shifter
The shifter of my carrera Cabriolet 87 (G50 gearbox) got suddenly loose this week.
The shifter use to be rather stif and not very precise, now it is very loose sidways but easier to shift (if you know where the gates are).
Did anyone had a similar problem?
Where should I look first?

walter,
it,s not to hard to replace the cup bushing
in the shifter and i,ve got a spare if you
need to buy one. when i took my shifter apart
the bushing was still good, but the cross
shafts were rusty, and the o-rings were dry.
i polished the cross shafts on a buffer, greased them and the o-rings, put it back
together and thought i had replaced the
transmission it worked so well. after that i
just had to see how much better i could make
it, so i replaced the transaxel fluid with
redline 75-90ns (not the regular 75-90)
again with noticable improvement and still
way less than $100.00 total spent.try it you,ll like it.

Thanks to Wayne for helping me solve this problem.
Here is a description of the solution:
The shift linkage goes straight back through the center console and
attaches to a round rod (about the size of your finger) that sticks out of
the front of the transmission. The linkage connects with a bold that screws
in from the drivers side, through the rod and threads into the back side of
the linkage (hard to describe). My guess is the bolt has come loose. Be
careful tightening it up as it is bolting into aluminum and the threads
could be weakened from working its way loose.
Finding the connection is easy if you can get the car off the ground. It is
the first thing behind the main floor pan in the center of the car.
