Spyderman:

First, I agree with you in that the end intention is the most important thing here. I did ask him that question earlier, but he was asking for "bullet proof" and said "aggressive". I can't agree with the idea of a 901's first gear being "bullet proof", though if handled well can last well so this why I suggested the 915.

If this is the same gentleman from Pelican that is putting electric Aero mirrors on his car, he obviously is not going stock. I haven't seen too many 17 year olds that go "stock". That is not a judgement call, just an observation of others and myself at 17. Either way it is wiser money spent than $25k on mod's for a 99' Civic to be on NOPI

I still think that some of the sand rail guys might be able to accomodate this, but not sure.

hey,

dont get me wrong, Im no stranger to modifications, My everyday driver is a 73 911t that has been converted to look like an RS, and has extensive modifications. I commute with this about 60-70 miles everyday. im just wondering what he is planing on doing with the car, if he is planning on keeping the 2.0 911L engine, i dont think it is going to be to much power for any 901 to handle, no matter what you do to that 2.0 motor, a 901 will be able to handle it. And it would be a much eaiser swap.

901 is the way to go . Sell the sporto parts on ebay. Liquid couplings, the sporto valve and the clutch servo are hard to come by for cars of this year. You'll need a blanking disc making for the sporto oil pump. Maybe you can get some feedback on the Uk DDK website

Here is just something I ran across on ebay. It may give you some idea of whats involved and the cost it may take. I have no affiliation to the seller and can say nothing about or for the products he has offered.

just bought myself a RHD 1970 911T sportamatic, and am wondering why these cars seem to be so unpopular?

i bought it to save it from being converted to a manual (the only people looking at it all wanted to change it) as i think it would be a shame, i find it is great fun and easy to drive.
i have had lots(and still have) of other Porsches all of which are manual,
i had never heard about these cars untill i found this one for sale..im intrigued by it and want to learn more.
anyone know where i can find out more?

they are unpopular b/c there are not enough shiftless people in the world...

search Pelican BBS for sporto and you'll pop up several threads

to defend your shiftless life choices, get Frere and other books and look up the race winning sporto 911R -- IIRC, it was the famed world speed & distance record car

The sportomatics are great vehicles for the handicapped or physically challenged. Example: a friend lost a left leg in an accident and could not handle a stick shift car, especially a Porsche any more. We found him a nice sportomatic and he has had it for over 30 years now. Changing one over is a mighty challenge and IMHO devalues the car. Why not just sell it and buy what you want?

I've owned my sporto since 1985 Helen and I love it. PM me if you fancy a telephone chat where I could tell you a lot about them, have a look at my webpage.

Think there may be a mix up regarding the 911R.

I believe the Monza speed and distance record setting car was a manual (October 1967), in fact because of the continuous high speeds Porsche removed the fourth gear cog and the car ran with two fifth gears. Porsche drove two 911Rs to Monza, one to run and one for spares. The Marathon de la Route winning car (84 hours around the 'Ring also 1967) was definitely a Sporto. A Sporto has also run at Daytona and Sebring.
