How to identify 87 3.2 engine
My dad is getting ready to buy a porsche that has an 87 3.2 engine with a 86 5 speed. Is there any way to verify this when we look at the car? What should the VIN on the engine say?

What year is the car supposed to be? 86 was a 915 trans, 87 was G50 trans, 87 engine number could be 63 or 64 H or J depending on what month in 87 it was made, H is 87 model J is 88 year model. The 2 trans do look different.

I forgot to tell you to look at the engine number, it is located on the fan housing, right side, down around the oil pressure sender. The trans number is on a flat area at the bottom of the trans, on a 915, might be the same location ona g50, don't know for sure, I have a 915/67 trans. has factory oil cooler and slightly different gear ratios.

engine # is on the engine case stamped on the right case half (as you look at the engine) on the cast fan stand/bracket holder. It can be hard to see if you have A/C sometimes.
engine should be for an 87 type 930/25 indicating Canada, U.S., Japan emissions setup with engine number starting 64H***** <------ * serial number.
If the engine were an 86 model along with the trans, it would have an engine # starting with 64G*****
