Default 911 dash update?

Hello all, Well i am back after a 2 year 10 month hiatus. That is when i sold my 944 turbo.....2month after baby born. This is the longest i have ever been with out a porsche. I pretty much have owned one since i was 19, all 944's and this is going to be my first 911. It is a 1971 911T and i got for $1500. We found out about the car from my inlaws who antique hunting and saw this beat up porsche or they thought it was a porsche. So i investigated and found out previous owner was original owner who had just finished a rebuild of engine and trany and completed brake work 4 years ago. He then died and left it in barn. His grandson was tasked by parents to sell off everything in barn/house/property in prep for their move in. Well the body is shot. Things from tools/equipment have fallen on top of car winshield is gone, dents everywhere. All paper work is/was all round car. Reciepts for most of work done. So I bought and plan to restore/upgrade. I have decided to buy a body kit from bodyworks, the 996 wide body. The kit should arrive in month. I know to some purist this is sacrilage....i am sorry. This just seemed to the cheapest/most attractive way to go.
One big question is the interior, i have ordered new carpet and i am looking for some newer seats hopefully 86 or newer condition not important..can alway recover. But the dash is so outdated. Does anyone know what to do to update the dash and add a center console and knee pads/section of dash. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks and great to be a porsche owner again

first off, to your question. you can use any dash up to and including the 993 dash. even the 993 center console can be retrofitted with quite a bit of work...

now, im no stranger to modifying, and i'd never call my self a purist. i like to tinker/mod too much. but i'll have to warn you about the 996 body update. its COMPLETELY disproportionate. COMPLETELY. you know the 996 is a bigger car dont you? its wider and longer. its an absolutely horrific look. it looks as out of place and dispropoationate as these civics with lamborarri-martin-benz lights. it looks vaguely like a 996. anyone with 1/8 of of a brain will know its not real (its painfully obvious) but to those who aren't 'in the know' will end up telling you..'it just looks funny'

its your car in the end....but please! do yourself a favor, and if you insist on having a low-budget newer looking 911, do the 993 or 964 body.

If you have to go with a fake body kit, look at the 993. It is at least proportional.

There are some choices here:

Another point to ponder...

If you plan to ever resell this '71, having a 996 body kit will really reduce it's value. A 964 or 993 kit is not quite as bad, but also won't increase value over a stock car. Most buyers will just walk away from an early car that is mod'ed like this, especially with a 996 kit. You could spend a ton of money and still have a car that isn't worth nearly as much as a stock car of the same vintage and mechanical condition.

Restoring the body to it's stock form will help the car retain the most value if you spend the right amount of time and money on the restoration.

Good Luck,

Jay

Why go modern? You bought a old car for what reason....to look new without any of the comforts or conveinence? If you want to LOOK WILD and who didn't at 21 y.o., then why not go a flamboyant 930 or RSR look? It would be age appropriate, have a better response from other Porsche owners, be easier, less $$ and later allow you to move up to a proper turbo engine once the mod bug really sets in to you. You could still run large wheels, get to run loud exhaust and a flashy paint job to one up the Civics your buddies will be driving with the heritage of Porsche behind you.

If this still isnt' wild enough, there was always the 934, 934.5, 935! All with proper windshield proportions and rake. If you must a 993 dual turbo body is pretty "modern" and easier to pull off.

My mistake, I will be doing a 993 wide body kit update....not the 996. I had spent the day looking a the 996 brochure all day and i guess it stuck in my mind. One of the main reasons for the purchase is that it is cheap, and for the price of the kit i can have a really good looking modern appearing car. As far as the engine goes, right now i would rather be in a fast looking car than present yukon.
Does any one know where you can buy aftermarket dash / console, like the 930 center console etc.

This looks so much better:

And this looks better still:

And either would cost you less.

The money you save can be put toward an engine, so it can get out of it's own way.
