Default '84 Carrera 3.2 915 tranny

Hello first post from me.

Question is whether a '84 carrera 3.2 comes equipped with a LSD from the factory. Will this tranny fit in a 79 3.0 straight up without mods or changing axles? I am having shifting issues with mine. Engagement into 2nd is getting difficult at times. I have swepco 201 in it right now. I figure it would be cheaper to buy this tranny with 56k miles than rebuild mine and add a quaife or GT LSD. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

LSD was an option from the factory so not all, or even most, '84's have it. While the tranny will fit with no problem, make sure you use the correct flywheel and clutch for your SC.

Check the option codes on the 84 is comes from. Option code 220 indicates LSD. If it is still in the car, jack up the rear and spin one of the tires. If both spin in the same direction, you've got LSD.

I wouldn't swap trannies simply to avoid a rebuild on a 915. The newer 915 with 56k miles likely will need a rebuild soon as well, as the synchros are notoriously fragile especially in the lower gears. I think you'd be better off rebuilding what you have.

Before you spend a lot of money on expensive things, check the cheap things first.

Make sure your clutch is properly adjusted.
Inspect the bushings in the shift coupler (open the cover on the floor between the rear seats)
Make sure the linkage is properly adjusted at the shift coupler.

There is a tech article on Pelican that covers this here:

Thank you for the information.
The car is actually an 82 (though i believe there were little or no differences)

Two questions in mind though,

Is it normal to have a longer throw between one and two than in the remaining gears. Does this indicates excessive wear on the two lower synchros?

The car im looking at is in minneapolis, has 120k decent int. & ext. (a couple 1/2 inch rust bubbles on rear hatch/decent paint) no oil leaks runs well
asking 12k will negotiate
Im lead to believe through research that this is a fairly good price, true?

Thank you very much
All help is appreciated,
Ben Goldstein
