I recently got quoted $250 for a 4 wheel alignment and that was the 'quick' 3 hour version. They guy said for a detailed one it can take all day. Why do 911 alignments take so long and is this a reasonable price?
Thanks

I had mine done twice last spring ... after the first, I was advised the ride height was incorrect and so had to adjust that and corner balance before getting the second. It was $175 CDN both times, which equates to two hours labor, but it actually took three hours each time ... the most difficult part is setting the rear camber and toe, as both rear wheels are set independently and changing one setting affects the other. Not sure about the all day version, but my guess would be that it includes a corner balance (strongly recommended anytime the ride height is altered).

I charge four hours to do an alignment and thats for a proper one, not just setting the toe which is about two hours, BUT I dont do it and definately dont recommend having it done because toe basically just cups your tires and your caster camber arnet checked or adjusted and toe must be set after camber in the proper procedure anyway. I charge extra for lowered cars as If they weren't lowered right, everything is way out and sometimes I'm unable to get it to factory specs 75% of the time. I also charge extra for Cayennes as its about the same as a 1-ton truck underneath and they are the worst if they have air suspension. To do it right is very a very involved prosses and usually takes half a day especially say a 993 with Elastokinematic toe correction where I have to use a set of bubble level sights on the trailing arms. You have to weigh the car down to simulate gas tank fillage, driver weight depending on the type of alignment, ride height, lots of fun stuff. I know for a fact there is about 4-5 hours worth of work for a good skilled technician in there, so are they doing 4-5 hours worth of work and charging you 2-hours, losing money for them and saving you money? OR are they doing it right to begin with?

Wow, that's expensive. There's a shop in SLC that is recommended by the Porsche Dealer who will do the full alignment for $89.00 The wrench at the P Dealer (a cool guy) sent me there as he said they (the P-Dealer) charge $179.00 and the shop he sent me to, has exactly the same alighment machine as they do and the guy use to work at the P-dealer doing only alignments for them. Sears also has the same machine and does it for $89.00. I did use Sears a while ago (as they are around the corner from my home) and the job ended up great. They do give you a total print out and a 6 month, 3000 mile warranty . of all the adjustments that they did and if they are off from factory settings. The print out included the current setting, the factory recommended setting with factory variance range and the final setting after alignment for front (left, right & cross) Camber, Caster, Toe, also included were SAI, Included Angle and Turning Angle Diff and for the rear, Camber and Toe for right, rear and cross. I spoke with the tech who did the work, and he told me the entire process, i.e., setting the back first then the front, then going back and rechecking everything after all adjustments were made to insure no settings had changed. The car handles great and runs stright and true. It also took care of a slight shimmy I had. I will take it back again. It's a great value for a good job. Also, they will set it to custom specs if you want as well.
