What year 911 should I buy (928owner)
Hello everyone, I have a great 928 and am considering buying a 911
1999/2000/2001. Can you please advise on the best year to purchase. Will it be water cooled? A fellow 928er told me that EVERY 911 will need a new rear main seal. What are some other drawbacks on owning a 911, and what is the difference between 911 & 993.
Thanks very much..
Rick

Rick,
The general rule of thumb, is to buy the newest 911 that you can afford. Certainly, the 84 3.2 Carrera and up are the best to start with. I have an 84, with 129,000 miles and just did the rear main seal this past year. It would not have had to been done though, if my origianl mechanic had done the seal when he replaced the clutch just after I bought the car in 1995. The biggest expense in the RMS is the labor to drop the motor and tranny.
regards,
Steve

Rick,
You're going to have to do some research to get a better idea what a 911 is. The model has changed tremendously over the years so there is a model for most folks taste. Each one has their own strengths and weaknesses so catch all comments like all 911's need RMS replacements are way off the mark. Ask yourself what you want from this 911 and do some reading. This board will help, but it won't replace your own research. I love both my 911's and believe me they are very different beasts.

996, eh if you can get an extended warranty, but get one with a soul and a fan attatched to the motor, you will be much happier and wont lose your *** in depreciation. I agree 84-89 911, 89-94 964, or a 95-98 993.

Rick, buying a P-car is very subjective. I would recommend the 993. 95-98. Though 96-98 would be my first choice. The newer cars 996s 99-04 are liquid cooled. Seems that from 99-01 there were many cars with RMS (rear main seal leak) issue.
Follow the above suggestion and visit the other forums. 993-996. Lots of opinions, lots of help.
Have fun and be patient. The "right car" will appear.
