Default SC distributor/electronic pick up

Can someone give me a way to test whether the electronic pick up in my SC distributor is good. It hits 6000 rpms and it feels like an rev limiter, when replaced by a frineds SC distributor it runs to redline. Any other ideas???

Maybe it is a rev limiter. Different rev limited rotors are available for the SC 6,200 AND 6,800 being two I know of. Ibelieve there is a lower one too. Perhaps you have this. It should be stamped on the rotor. I use a 6,800 one.

Hi , I looked at that but it is not a rev limiting rotor. Just was curious if these electronic pick ups can go bad and what the symptoms are. thanks for the input .

Hi:

Its pretty rare that the magnetic pickup goes bad and when they do, its either a failure to start or ignition misses throughout the rev range.

The first thing I would do is replace the green coaxial cable that plugs into the distributor as thats a common failure point. Then, I'd look VERY closely at the cap and rotor for the minute signs of crossfiring.

If that doesn't cure it, I'd find someone with a distributor machine that can test the whole thing.
