A PO had painted my S calipers black. The paint was also starting to flake. Since I needed the rebuild the brakes, I dumped my calipers in bucket with a large cup of Tide and hot water. I let them soak for many hours and then scrubbed them with a scouring pad. The calipers looked new when I was done.
