i had my 86 lowered today.....
hello all,
i have a 86 carrera and took it into a shop in south fla to have it lowered today. the shop has been around for a long time and races 914 911 etc quite a bit. when i spoke to the owner i told him i wanted it lowered to the classic 911 stance. he told me that they lower 911 about 1 inch all around with a slight rake to the front, meaning slightly nose down.
i have a set of 993 7x16 and 9x16 on the car with 205 55 on the front and 245 45 on the rear. he called me and told me i have the wrong size tires on the back. i called my wheel and tire guy to check and he said what i have is porsche spec sizes and that the mechanic was wrong.
i went to pick the car up and my 911 was low...really low. i dont like it! he gave me the measurments before and after, they lowered it right at 1 inch all around. the car sits flat with no rake to the front. i told him i though it was too low and he told me when i put the proper size tires on it it will raise the rear to the proper height. he suggested a 245-50 16 and all should be good.
my question is are 245 45 the right size for the rear on a 9x16?
those of you that have lowered your cars, how much was it lowered?
can someone measure the lip on the rear from the ground so i can compare the hieght of mine to yours?
any pictures of lowered cars, maybe a close up of wheel opening?
he did tell me if i was unhappy he could lift it a little to make me happy, but i will live with it for right now.and also, my tire guy told me there is no 245 50 for my car, but that was an old size for mid 80s vettes.
thanks in advance,
Brandon

205/55-16 front and either 225/50-16 or 245/45-16 for the rears. The Overall Diameter (OD) of the 225/50 and 245/45 are essentially equal. A 245/50-16 (if they actually make them) would give the car more "rake" but would impact your gearing. I don't have my car next to me as I type, but I recall measurements like 23.5" or 24.5" from ground to fender lip being an appropriate "lowered" stance. Hope that helps

Thanks for the replys. i just measured my car and the rear is 23.25 inches from the ground. also gearing isnt something i had considered. the 993 wheels are heavier then the fuchs which hurt performance some already, i dont want to make it worse with bad gearing.
any more measurments on rear ride height?
thanks again

European spec per Bruce Andersons "Porsche 911 Performace Handbood" approx. 25" to rear fender lip and 25 1/2 to front. Also, have you made the mods for "bump steer?" When lowering your car to your specs, you will experience harsh bump steer without lowering the steering rack or using modified tie rod ends.
Just my opinion.
Good luck!

Hello,
Almost *** dragger. from some angles it looks ok, from others it looks funny. would still like to see some pics of lowered to euro spec 911s. or several different measurments from various cars to take to the shop when i ask him to raise it some.
also, in eveyones opinion, is it wrong for me to ask him to raise it and expect not to have to pay him?
thanks

Brandon,
If you have lowered the suspension you have altered the angle of the tie rods and the conventional type do not like this - effect is bump steer, particularly when driving hard - cheap fix at about $150'ish (UK price - probably cheaper for you guys!)

My car (89 3,2 Carrera) is 24 3/4 in the rear and 25 1/4 in the front. This is just about euro ride height. I do have Turbo Tie rods and they will make a differance on a narrow body car when lowering. They have a ball joint with out the rubber that allows for more unresricted movement ,more road feel, and more precise steering. You may also have to install a bump steer kit if the tie rod is not about level when the car sits. When the car is lowered beyond a certain point the geometry gets off and causes bump steer... a very scarry feeling when taking that speedy corner and a small bump sets your car wrong.
As for the tires, my car has the stock 205 55 16s in front and 245 45 16 in the rear. This is what the factory manuel and the sticker in the engine compartment calls for on 16x7 and 16x9 fuchs. Your shop is wrong.
I would go to another 911 specific shop that can align, corner balance and lower your car correctly. I am sure someone here can recommend a reputable one in your area --where do you live?

I've been researching this very topic for my 911SC, as I'm planning on a second set of track wheels and tires.
It's tough to say what is right and wrong...it depends on what you are looking to accomplish. As far as what is factory, keep in mind that your car's body and fender shape is the same as all 78-89 cars (and the early Carrera 3.0s from earlier). From the factory during those times, there wer all kinds of combos: 15x6 and 15x7, 15x7 and 15x8, 16x6 and 16x7, 6's and 9's...I'm not sure if 7's and 8's in 16", 8's and 9's, or 6's and 8's were ever factory, but they certainly work and are common.
I'm also having issues because my car was dropped dramatically...below Euro height (haven't measured exactl how low it actually is).
