I will have the owner take my digital camera home with him and snap some photos. I will post them on here when I get them.

At the time, I was surprised when I saw how little rust it had, compared
to others I'd known in upstate NY. I bought it in North Carolina in 1981, not 1987,
and I see that it was titled as a 1967, not 1965, although I'm pretty sure it has Solex carbs.

Another gentleman called a few years ago, proposing to restore it with his teenage son.
While I applauded the notion, and I suspect 911 restoration may have been mostly a pretext
for father-son bonding, I strongly discouraged the idea of a teenager driving a SWB 911.

well, to be honest, i dont know how serious i am yet... but lets just say its certainly gotten my attention. it all depends on how serious everything is and how much the owner is looking for. but yeah.. its caught my eye. (what can i say im a sick man.. a very sick man )

i love the early cars with a passion. especially the 65 and 66's. the script numbering on them, the teak dash, the green gauge with crome bezzels, the early headlights, just a very very classic look.

speaking of dash, a couple things catch me as suprising though.. on the 912's, the 65's have a 3 gauge dash (shouldnt this be the same with the 911? as the only things different in those years were the engine? yes, the gauges should be different for the speedo, tac, as well as the oil psi/temp combo, but regardless, it should still be a 3 gauge set up unless someone added gauges?)

also, the early 65's had painted dashes, painted the same color as the exterior, just like the 356's. this is somthing that stopped in late 65/early 66...

not being nosey, or offensive by any means towards this car. just making general observances and looking for claification from an early 911 afficianoto..

also 2 questions for the owner. what is the original paint code on the door sill (would like to find out if polo red is the original color), and what are the last digits of the vin (curious to know only because id like to find out if its a late or early 65).

also while we are at it, how is the front pan, the fenders from undernath, the rockers, and the area under the rear window seals?

does it have a webasto heater? what kinds of records/documents do you have of the history?

also whats the story with the motor? original? later model? if so what year/model did it come from. is it in need of a rebuild, or just not running? is it seized and not rebuildable?

im kind of curious as to why it has a 67 title? any ideas why?

thanks for letting me pick your brain,
Harry

I was under the assumption that the 911 always had a 5 guage dash from 1965 and on... Didn't the 912 have 3 gages at first as a cost saving measure?

no, i believe the 64 911s had the 3 gauge as well.. and i would assume the 65 911 would too sine the 912 did. you see, it wasnt a cost saving thing. the 356 had 3 gauge dashes, and it was one of the stylings that was transfered over from the 356 to the new model (remember the 911 came before the 912.. the 912 was an after thought!).

soon the painted dash gave way to the black and aluminum trim or teak trim (depending on the option), and the new fangled 901 engine needed better monitoring of its systems b/c it was more complicated than the 356 before it. (this is my assumption)

now the only difference in gauges between the 911 and 912 are the innerds obviosuly and then the 912 redlines at 6k, and ends at 7k. the 912 also bottoms out at 130mph on the speedo.

further more the 912 has a seperate fuel gauge, and a gauge that has a green dummy rather than oil preassure.

the 901 has a temp gaiuge/oil preassure gauge combo.. somthing alot of 912ers are buying off of 911 parts cars to have restored by hollywood speedo to put in to the 912 for vbetter systems monitoring.

btw.. im gonna take a guess and say this is a late 65..

I'm home and checked a couple of my 911 books. My books show that the 911 started right from the beginning with 5 guages in the dash...

Hi Harry -

> what is the original paint code on the door sill,

I think the tag says "KUNSTHARZLACK Farbton 6603"
http://home.alltel.net/stevenweed/karosserie.JPG

> and what are the last digits of the vin

The NC title has VIN 304733.
I thought 911s had dual batteries by 1966 and this one appears to have only ever had one.

> also while we are at it, how is the front pan, the fenders from undernath,
> the rockers, and the area under the rear window seals?

Don't know, never had it on a lift; presumably rusty. Folks only familiar with
cars since the 80s are usually shocked by the abundance of rust on earlier ones.

> does it have a webasto heater?

I'm not sure; also bought a VW 411 about the same time and was working on other
VWs and Porsches with gas heaters.

> what kinds of records/documents do you have of the history?

none.

> also whats the story with the motor? original? later model?
> if so what year/model did it come from.

It never occurred to me that it was other than original.

> is it in need of a rebuild, or just not running?
> is it seized and not rebuildable?

Don't know; briefly started it before buying, but it had no exhaust and I did not
want to burn any valves. It's not been turned over since, so it could be seized.

> im kind of curious as to why it has a 67 title? any ideas why?

Before federal smog and safety standards,
it was not uncommon for imports to be titled in year of first sale.
Some states, e.g. NY had no titles until some time after we moved to NC in 1979.

My understanding is that the first 500 or so 'production" 911s used more 356 parts
ith more expert hand-fabrication than later production line examples.
Looser production chassis alignment tolerances contributed to twitchy SWB handling
which had not been as prominent in that first batch.

dual battery boxes came in 69 (i know the grill fog lights for the 69 up mounted to the boxes through the grills.. the 67's couldnt do that b/c they didnt have them, so that had to mount to the fender, behind the grill). original color was Gulf blue.. which is a 66 and 67 color.. (maybe a 65 built 66 model?) thats kind of interesting about how they the titled back then, i never knew that. btw thanks, i couldnt make out the tags in the pics. ill try to find out tonight when i get off work about the vin (where about in the line it is)

the weabsto, if it has it will be in the smugglers box in the trunk. (the little lidded area abive the gas tank) would be neat to have but i dont know if i would ever have it really hooked up (known to start fires from what ive heared)

are you doing anything this saturday? i might be able to come down and take a look.
