Hey all, I am a 944/951 buff who just sold his 16 valve for a 951...but is falling in love with the 911. I see some lesser priced cars with a "sportomatic" transmission, one from 1968, some others from the early 70's. What is this transmission? Is it a torque converter automatic? If it is an automatic, how expensive/difficult is it to swap in a decent used 4 speed manual unit?
Thanks, Evan

The money you will spend changing out the tranny on that Sporto and getting it working 100% (and you don't want a 4-speed because the 5-speed drives worlds better and the 4-speed hurts you on resale) will probably be equal to the money you would have spent buying a early 911 5-speed in the first place, which in the long run is worth more on resale.
(For the best early 911 info, best to ask the folks on the early 911S registry site. You'll find the highest concentration of early 911 fanatics there.)
Good luck with your purchase.
