Listed stock was 6x15 and 7x15, but I think all of the U.S. cars came with the "optional" 6x16 and 7x16 wheels at an additional charge. The '89s got 6x16 and 8x16.

I looked at a 1988 Signature Edition car back in 2000 that was equiped with 15" factory Fuch's. I know of another Signature car locally that still retains it's stock 15" rims. I do think they exist, but Mark, you're right, most people opted for the larger wheels. 1989 was the first year for the standard 16" Fuch's.

Yes, my '88 Commemorative Edition (i.e. Signature Edition) has 15" Fuchs that are painted Diamond Blue Metallic. Normally, I don't go for wheels painted the same color as the car, but it sure 'works' for me on these cars. That being said, someday I will 'store' these, and go with the handling benefits available with modern tires on 16" wheels.

See Mark Haab book "The 911, 912E &930 Porsche Authenticity" book page 90. Gives full list of standard and option wheels for all models.

Now the next obvious question . . .

On those 7&8x15s . . . which tire size is best for street use? Yes, I have done lots of searches (here & Pelican). The consensus seems to be 205/55/15 on front & 225/50/15 on rear without rolling the fenders. Which means Bridgestone S-03s or Yoko ES100s.

Does this sound right?

The reason I am asking is, yes, I finally bought a car. 87 Cab 61K miles 1 owner. It will be delivered in 3 weeks or so (yet to finalize). PPI says brakes, rotors & tires are needed. 16" wheels will not be on the horizon for a couple of years.

Default 1988 wheels

I have a 1988 Commemorative Edition, and last week solved the same problem you're having now. Stock tires were: 195-15-60 front, and 205-15-60 rear. After exhaustive research, I decided on:

Michelin Pilot XGT V4, 205-15-60 front, and 225-15-60 rear. This allowed me to maintain the original overal tire radius, and not affect the speedometer reading, and of course keep my factory wheels and maintain the originality of the car.

I'm extremely pleased, and really like how these tires fill up the wheel well. You won't get that with 55, or 50 series tires on 15" wheels.

Can you post a full side view? What is your ride height?

I am importing (shipping the car) into Canada & it will not pass a safety check with the current bald rubber (195-65 & 215-60) so I will have to install immediately.

Aside from handling, filling the wheel wells would be good too . . .

I personally have always liked the 15" wheels. I think that as mentioned they do fill the wheel wells better, and I have found that I like the "ride" better. This is especially true where the roads are not that great. For "just ordinary driving" they are fine. Then again I only like the original Fuchs wheels, so YMMV

Ride height is unmodified. I don't have a full side view, but will take one and post on Sunday.

Very nice looking cab!! I like the color. I looked at numerous blue 911s - I didn't want red or black - and even sent several for PPI but they all failed for one reason or another. White was a borderline color for me . . . but my test drive sold me.

Thanks for the pics. Now I have to decide . . .
