Jake:

You should not do this *****-nilly.

You'll need either a 4 or 5 Gas Analyzer, or an A/F meter such as the Innovative ones. Using a long 3mm allen wrench, you can set the idle CO to 2.5% where they run best (open loop).

sounds like I should take it in. What would a shop charge to do this? would it be worth it for me to buy the meter? thanks

Steve I've very recently replaced all gaskets and seals, 0-rings etc on the top of the engine without splitting the crankcases and detailed my '78 SC engine, simultaneously I fitted early heat exchangers (not SSIs) and a Triad West Performance 2 in 2out exhaust. The result is my engine no longer hunts from cold start and revs like it is a new engine. I asked my mechanic who installed the engine to check the mixture and I assume he has set it on the rich side if at all. The only downside of my hard work is the engine now splutters into life from a cold start for a few seconds befoire bursting into life where previously the merest hit of the starter fired all cylinders instantly. I think it's mixture related any pointers for me?

Bones:

I think you need to check your "cold" control pressures to ensure they are in spec with temperature.,.....

Further, I would see what your idle CO is. 2.0-2.5 is fine.
