Question New "High Output" Alternator @ Pelican

Anyone have experience/opinion regarding the new 90-watt "All Bosch Parts" alternators offered by Pelican for the '84-'89? I'm trying to decide whether to replace the unit in my '87 3.2 with one of those, or the OEM C-603-120-05 unit. By the way, some guys say the OEM has an internal regulator, but my current Valeo "Bosch Reman" which is supposed to be the equivalent of the OEM has an external replaceable one. Who's right? Thanks.

There has been an Australian-manufactured 'all bosch parts' alternator around for several years now. I believe one of the Aase's is/was the US distributor. Don't know if that's the one Pelican is selling or not, however. Looking at it's picture, it appears to have the integrated regulator.

By way of background, in 1982, Porsche went to an alternator with an integrated, and replaceable, regulator (black box on the bottom side away from the fan). In the Porsche Parts and Technical Reference, there is the technical newsletter that provides directions for installation in earlier 911's.

For your 87, the Porsche alternator is 911.603.120.05, which has a replaceable regulator (911.603.913.01) and replaceable diode plate (911.603.910.01) on it.

When I replaced the alternator in my SC, I went with a new one from a discounting Porche dealer. The 25%+ off list discounted price plus the two year warranty worked for me.

Default Pelican's High Output alternator

That's the one - made in Australia. Evidently 911 & Porsche World had an article about it in issue 105 but I do not have access to the issue. Anybody out there who has the issue and can summarize the article for me? At any rate, any idea as to the reliability of the Aussie made, "all Bosch parts" unit?

Internal regulated alternators are less reliable than external ones, especially ones
for air cooled engines. Bosch never made an internal regulated alternator for any
911 from '82 thru '89. Unless this new one has "cannibalized" parts from old Bosch
alternators, I doubt that it has "all Bosch parts". I would avoid using non-OEM
alternators in an early 911 without some sort of a reliability record.

The '82 & '83 OEM Paris-Rhone alt. provided 75 amps and the '84 - '89
provided 90 amps. The '82 & '83 is very unreliable especially when
using a large battery, e.g. 928 type.

If I lived in Fairbanks I would be buying the highest cold cranking amps battery that could be had and an alternator to match.

90 AMPERES not watts.

FWIW, my alternator died last year. I paid $89 for a rebuilt at a local foreign starter and alternator rebuilder, and it's been working like a champ since the day I installed it.

Thanks, guys. I have decided on the Aussie alternator and will let you know how it goes. By the way, I am learning the difference between "internal" and "external" regulators. "Internal" regulators are like the one on my OEM, which is replaceable but requires pulling the fan housing but not the alternator. I originally thought that made it an "external" regulator, but have since learned that this is not so. "External" regulators are mounted someplace else besides on the alternator. Both are possibly replaceable without replacing the alternator itself, depending upon model, I guess. The '87 will obviously be an ongoing learning experience, as many of you obviously have experienced yourselves.
Thanks
