Semi-idle curiosity here... What is the proper method of repainting door jams and the like that have those all important VIN stickers? It would seem a dead giveaway that the car had been repainted if the stickers were just masked over.

Not sure what proper is, but when I had damage to the door post that required repainting, they just masked the VIN. It was kind of obvious, but I did not think there was any other simple option.

Not sure what attention to detail has to do with "trying to hide a repaint" (as if that's possible to anyone looking even remotely hard), but a replacement VIN sticker for your door jamb is available from your local dealer.
The P/N is 911.701.112.29. You need to bring a copy of your title or other proof of ownership, and complete a one page form that gets sent to PAG in Germany. Last time I did this a few years ago on a project car the fee was $65, and it took a few months for it to arrive. Some dealers may be better than others in assisting, but its a pretty straightforward process with a competent parts department.
Good luck,
Tim

Thanks Tim - I should have guessed that there was a way to get new stickers. Perhaps I should explain myself in that I have suspected that besides a LF fender, other parts of my 911 have been repainted by a po, albeit an extremely nice job (I'm a stickler for such things). I just never could figure how stickers on the door jams could be made to appear factory applied after a repaint. - Jim
