Default Filters

Ok, this weekend I will be changing the filters (fuel, oil) on my friend's 80' 911 SC, (My first time in the engine of such a car), What types of filters do I need to get? Any specific brands recommended? I'd check the car and see but I have to pick them up before heading out to the car's storage spot.

Thanks,

Nix

Nix:

Above all, use a Factory German oil filter like the Mahle ones.

Thanks for the reply.

I suppose I could only get those at a porsche dealer and they'd probably be an arm and a leg too, no? I need them for the weekend as well so ordering is out of the question.

I realise that a purist would only put factory german filters in his/her expensive german ride but this is an '80 and it's seen better days. Can I get away with anything other than factory?

Thanks,

Nix

Nossir, they are rather cheap overall and there are alternative sources.

Rule of Thumb: NEVER, EVER use any domestic oil filters on any 911 engine.

You put a $12K-15K engine at risk and its not worth the $5 savings.

Ok, advice taken! I live in Vancouver Canada. What would these alternate sources be? Should I just go into a P-dealer and buy filters? Can you do that?

THanks again,

Nix

If you need them quickly, I'd visit your Dealer.

The Mahle OC-54 filters are available from a number of sources, including Rennlist sponsor Paragon Products, around $6 each. As Steve mentioned, if you need one right away, go to your local Porsche dealer (unless someone sells Mahle filters, of course). The Mahle (original Porsche filter maker) and Porsche filters have a relief valve built into them that domestic filters don't have. If you have access to the PCA Up-Fixin' series, there are several articles in there where they've taken filters apart to analyze them. So, Steve's comment about using a good German filter is right on the money.

Even the P-dealers sell them cheap. The last time I needed one and was out of my normal supply of Mahle, I headed to the dealer and it was $8.00 USD. I shop around and the last time I purchased the Mahles, I got a four or five pack plus a bunch of crush washers - two for each filter purchase, including shipping, it was only about $30 USD for everything..

When I need to buy a filter locally , I will go to Weissach Performance on West 2nd in Vancouver. They are very helpful and it is fun to see what they have in the show room. They also give a small discount for PCA members.
